Voltron Headcanon

Pidge knows that she isn't exactly the kindest or most approachable person on their team. Honestly, she sometimes wonders why no one has reprimanded her for her behavior yet. This applies especially to Lance, whom she knows she tends to snap at more often than anyone else.

But if you were to ask Lance... he would remember how a sleepy Pidge clings to them in search of warmth and comfort. How she goes out of her way to bring their every fleeting, offhand idea to life. And, of course, how she protects them with limitless, fierce determination. And he would just answer with something along the lines of, "She's just our little gremlin."

Future propaganda for the women of Voltron: Legendary Defender! That show did some great things with its female characters at first; it’s a reboot of a show from the 80s and generally gave the women a lot more to do than just be one-note villains or damsels in distress. They also took a male character from the 80s show, Pidge, and made her a woman in the new version. Her character’s actual name is Katie Holt: Pidge is a pseudonym that ends up sticking. It was so fun to have the show’s resident tech genius be not just a young woman, but a fairly genderfluid woman who’s often mistaken for a boy in the show (she disguises herself as a boy for plot reasons, but doesn’t change anything about her appearance after the rest of the team learn she’s a girl). Pidge also got a great plotline about trying to reunite with her brother who was lost in space and presumed dead; there was a heartbreaking scene where she thought she found his grave (he was fine, don’t worry, but that scene was a high point of the show).

Unfortunately, the fandom generally took less interest in Pidge than in her male teammates, writing her out of fanfic or treating her like a background character so the boys could get all the attention. She was often reduced to a few low-hanging jokes (either “girl looks like a dude,” so original and funny am I right, or “nerd who says big science words” because gods forbid a woman in STEM talk about her interests) in fic or in the fandom in general. Pidge also got treated like a kid a lot in fandom, I guess because she’s short, dresses like a preteen boy, and has a sense of humour. Her age (or the ages of any characters in the show) was never made explicit by the show, but she starts the show in an elite space academy, so would be in her late teens/early 20s at the youngest. I have more thoughts about the other main female character, Allura, but I’ll put them in another ask. For now, justice for Pidge/Katie Holt!! Would love to see her in a future tournament❤️

Voltron: Legendary Defender anon here again with some Allura propaganda. Allura got treated so badly by both the fans and, eventually, by the show (which didn’t help her treatment by fans, alas). She started out as a huge step up from the 80s version of her character; the show gave her a really cool, ethereal design instead of just making her a white blonde woman in a pink jumpsuit.

The reboot version of Allura is still very feminine and wears a lot of pink and pastels, but she’s a highly competent fighter, mech pilot, and politician at the same time. I’m sure some of her poor treatment in the fandom came from her femininity (she also has a fondness for sparkly clothes, playing dress up, and cute-looking snack food. We love a woman with hobbies!). On top of that, she’s a woman of colour, which unfortunately added to some nasty fans disliking her on principle.

Allura got heavily sidelined in fan portrayals of her character, often reduced to a cheerleader for gay ships or to the “team mom” (when she was more like a team leader!!). Fans tore her to shreds every time she made a faulty strategic choice or had literally any type of emotion. She’s a young woman who’s one of the last surviving members of her species, fighting against the empire who killed off her people, but fans hated it whenever she expressed loneliness or sadness or survivor’s guilt.

The vitriol against Allura got kicked way up in the later seasons of Voltron, when she and Lance, a member of her crew, started dating. Lance was one half of an extremely popular m/m pairing and fans of this ship HATED Allura for daring to be into him. She also got killed off in a really rushed, nonsensical way in the final season and I’m still mad about it years after the show ended, after I’ve left the fandom far behind (Voltron fans back in the day were AWFUL, I can’t overstate this despite being one at the time. That fandom had me in the trenches!!!).
