I disagree strongly with the (weirdly, imo) popular argument that Veth’s story is basically 100% resolved and that she’s just along for the ride for the rest of the campaign.
However, I can absolutely understand the disappointment that nothing really happened with the Corecut Dagger at the end of the day besides a moment of ‘oh shit this could have been really bad’.
I also think the argument that it’s a random dagger that was acquired by chance falls a bit flat when you look at how the Holy Avenger (a random sword acquired by chance) is beginning to play out for Yasha.
(Campaign 1 Spoiler alert) Basically the Corecut dagger is what we would have gotten had Craven Edge lacked sentience. Would that plot have been as fun as it was if all we got was cryptic statements from Matt during battles that Grog wanted to kill with the sword and cryptic statements after battle about Grog feeling exhausted?
Now, mind you, this isn’t an argument that the Corecut dagger needed to be sentient or anything more than what it was. But I do wonder what the journey could have been had it not rested primarily on Sam’s shoulders to make something out of it. IMO, D&D is not that type of purely character driven game and Matt as a DM has never been afraid to give folks nightmares or narration to make things interesting and raise stakes, you know?
Still, I think the beauty of D&D and TTRPGs in general is that anything can happen. That a player can have a backstory, goals and plans but all of that could change because of a completely random occurrence. And Sam clearly likes it when shit goes awry, so even if the Corecut dagger wasn’t the twist people were expecting, I don’t doubt that something else could happen that could shake things up for Veth in interesting directions.

Hi there! This is the master doc for Veth’s cursed dagger, the Corecut Dagger. At the top of this doc, there is a link to a video with every moment with the dagger. Below that are all of the timestamps for the dagger with a color key to indicate what the context of the timestamp is, and below that there is a section for theories and connections.
This was done with the help of Ness and @nott-gay
giant eagle veth! giant eagle veth!
[ID: three watercolour illustrations of Veth polymorphed as a giant eagle with brown, yellow and green plumage. Beauregard is standing next to her raving. Eagle-veth flies through the air making a ‘scraaak’ sound, then stands proudly holding the corecut dagger in her beak. End ID]
Matt and Sam giggling over the cursed dagger, requested by @nott-gay
[ID: four edited screenshots of Sam and Matt from critical role, both grinning excitedly. Matt is looking at Sam while Sam looks at his character sheet with his hands up to his face. In the first two images, they are both surrounded by heart emojis. In the second two, there is a menacing red filter and they’re surrounded by knife emojis, eyes and ‘smiling imp’ faces. End ID]
if someone dies in 123 I think it will be veth and I hate it.
she has the lowest HP and con in the party, and from what little we know about ms. cursed dagger✨, it both puts her more often in melee and does something nasty to her hit dice.
it’s possible lucien sees her as a chink in the nein’s armour because he’s separately seen yasha and caleb being affectionate with her, and we know he’s drawn to both of them. otis is probably holding a grudge too.
I JUST LOVE VETH SO MUCH I LOVE MY GIRL... DON’T WANT HER TO DIE
fun fact! in episodes 116-17, after the crystals and oozes and all that, after the short rest, veth had probably used 11-12 out of her 13 hit dice, assuming that sam rolled averagely. if she got into any kind of combat and got almost any amount of magical healing afterwards (assuming sam spent 11 hit dice already, this would mean a healing of 9 HP or more, further assuming sam rolls average or below on it), she would've instadied :)
oh, i misheard the rules... it'd just be 1 hit die no matter how much she gets healed magically. so if she rolled below average on her short rest, any healing would've killed her afterwards
the fact we were so close to her Actually Dying 😳 no wonder sam and matt were looking at each other like that
