2015 San Diego Chargers Evaluations: Defensive Line
The Defensive Line was the only unit on the Chargers that could compete with the Offensive Line for the dubious distinction of worst position group.
On the Roster: Corey Liuget, Sean Lissemore, Ryan Carrethers, Darius Philon, Tenny Palepoi,
Corey Liuget: In his first season after signing a big extension, Corey was unimpressive. He is, however, pretty much a man on an island. I would say he’s an above average player at his position that has had the difficulty of having no one near average ability to play with him on the DL these past few years.
Kendall Reyes: Reyes turned in another sub-par season. He was probably the Chargers’ worst defender this year. He has no contract going forward and I would be quite surprised to see
Sean Lissemore: Lissemore struggled somewhat against the run this year, but surprisingly provided little pass rush besides the very first week of the season. He was also limited to 11 games. He likely remains a low end option for the Nickel packages on Defense.
The Backups: Ricardo Mathews, Ryan Carrethers, Damion Square, and Darius Philon all saw significant snaps for the Chargers on the DL. Philon was rookie and was expected to have growing pains, and he did, but there’s upside there. Square wasn’t bad either. Mathews and Carrethers were disappointing. Both men carried the reputation for being strong against the run going into the season but both were ineffective at that job throughout the year.
Plan for the Future: Liuget, Lissemore, and Philon will all definitely be back. Tenny Palepoi has flashed some upside as well despite missing last season entirely. However, I expect the Chargers to add 3-4 DL this Offseason, both through the NFL Draft and through Free Agency. I would expect a Defensive Lineman to be their 1st round selection if they stay at number 3 overall, and I expect that one of the bigger names in Free Agency will be headed their way as well. The Defense wasn’t that bad last year, and if the Chargers can get some serious talent along the DL, they could possibly stabilize the entire Defense rather quickly.
