For the past few years, I’ve been allowing myself one (and only one!) Grateful Dead tribute band experience. Hey, I have my dignity. This year I’m totally going to see Shakedown Street, Colorado’s long-running Dead cover band, take on the White Whale: Cornell ‘77. It’ll be fun, won’t it?
Like so many other Dead Freaks, this show was a key gateway for me. And like so many other Dead Freaks, I’m not entirely sure if it deserves its “Greatest Show Ever” status. Don’t get me wrong, though, it is great. But I do like my Spring ‘77 with a little “Sugaree.” For some reason, when I want to revisit Barton Hall, I prefer the audience recording to the soundboard -- there’s something a little more lively and you-are-there about it...
