Corn flowers are flowers too! I grew up surrounded by corn fields and I've grown small patches of corn since I was a child - never really thinking about the tassels and silks as flowers. It's probably because I'm an animal and I'm not the wind. If I was the wind: these tassels, each dangling their thousands of anthers, would deposit millions of dusty pollen grains into my gusts to travel sometimes miles, but usually feet, for a couple short minutes of airborne life. Some lucky grains would land quickly on the female silks, each one forming a kernel. Beets, spinach, corn, sorghum, oats, barley: the beauty of their flowers may be in the eye of the beholder - and they are held lovingly by the wind. #corntassels #cornanthers #cornflowers #cornpollination #windpollination #oaxacangreendent #imananimal #ifiwasthewind (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)
