There is lot of talk about Kerala's rising covid numbers. But they miss one crucial point. According to sero survey conducted by ICMR, which is a central govt body, Kerala has the lowest sero-prevalence in the country, which means that the virus has infected the fewest people as a proportion of the total population. But still they have the highest positive numbers. This doesn't add up. Sero survey is sort of gold-standard to gauge how many are infected in a population. Certain Vikas Singh who The Hindu quoted in its report pointed out how Kerala had a test positivity rate of over 10 percent while Uttar Pradesh has it at just .02 percent. Yes, believe it, Kerala is compared with UP and that's how far off they are in fighting covid. And yet, somehow, UP govt has to pay international outlets like Time magazine to publish ads looking like articles praising the saffron-clad monk and hatemonger Ajay Singh Bisht aka Yogi Adityanath. Time and Guardian had real unpaid reports praising Kerala model. WHO itself has a page on its site detailing the Kerala model of fighting Covid. So this narrative which is built on hard data just doesn't add up.

There are two explanations to explain this ambiguity. One, sero survey by ICMR is flawed or fudged to say Kerala has lowest infections. But then, why would Modi's govt fudge a survey to show a opposition ruled Kerala to shine... that doesn't add up either. Other explanation is more plausible and on multiple cases a proved one - that other states are undercounting, other states are hiding and fudging their positive numbers. This is not to say Kerala is testing everyone and treating every infection there is, but right now, it is a state that is testing and finding as much positives in its population as possible. And other states are not. UP, sort of the least.

Remember the Lancet study that said, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra had most reliable record of public data.

After all this, you can still trumpet how Kerala is failing, and all the while let your own states test less and less to show-off on paper how successful they are, but don't forget, the virus doesn't care any of this. It'll continue to spread and mutate as it spreads and at one point have a mutation capable of more sever carnage than what it has already wrought.

Truth of the matter is, there are more cases in Kerala because Kerala is doing a greater number of tests.
