Shikabane Kaigo | Miura Harumi & Miura Kazuki
Two horror manga I've really been thinking about a lot lately:
Shikabane Kaigo (Corpse Care) - Ongoing
Description: Woman, after leaving her nursing job to become a private caregiver, has to move to a big mansion at the top of a mountain. It turns out, however, that the person she's supposed to be taking care of is already dead... or is she?
My thoughs: I love it so much, the big mansion and the way author uses light makes it feel very gothic while not being a typical ghotic period piece. The story is mature and very "elegant" you could say in a way it's being executed, a slow burn that still manages to stay very interesting. The art is also amazing, it's very detailed and realistic while staying clearly sylized, reminds me a lot of Satoshi Kon's works.
Nikubami Honegishimi - Ongoing
Description: An occult journalist searches for a reason behind his aunt's unusal death. He contacts an exorcist who recalls his time working with another occult journalist that might shed some light on what exactly happened to her.
My thoughs: It's almost a total opposite of the previous manga, as this one is episodic and very stylized. What I really like is that despite the heavy stylization you don't feel detached from characters and the gore (as there is some). Often works like that feel like watching dolls getting thrown around instead of people, but here the sudden shift to realism really adds to the uncannny feeling we're supposed to experience. While episodic it takes some time to flesh out each little arc a bit more than your avarage episodic manga and the connecting characters are all very endearing and likeable. I also really like their approach of melting the lovecraftian aspects with traditional japanese beliefs that makes each case both original and stylistically coherent.
Project Announcement - Shikabane Kaigo
I know, I know - another new project? But I promise I can commit! Anyway, ever since I finished Volume 1 of Tonari no Jii-san, I’ve missed working on an ongoing non-anthology series. This one has been sitting in my library for a while, so I decided to translate it between projects. The art and story feel compelling, and I love atmospheric horror with female protagonists - they’re always so relatable. It’s a fairly new release, published this year.

Embalmer’s Dolls
“I promise I’ll take good care of a l l of you when it’s your time. I’ll be sure to liven you up before your long rest. No worries, I’ll be quite gentle and respectful with you. You deserve the most beautiful caskets lovingly handcrafted by me, my dears.”
