first of all here's a shrimp as requested 🦐
actual "how stuff works" question time: how did y'all figure out what you look like? given a lot of y'all are weird furries and/or aliens (/pos) i mean
thanks for asking this, bc this is something we've been wanting to talk about but weren't sure where to start!
so, we have aphantasia. we can imagine the general shape of things, and maybe some specific details, but otherwise it's all a vague blurry impression. we only started realizing this when Pat was system main, but kie thought kie was just unable to see color in-system and not, y'know, it being a shared issue. (although some of us do have different places on the scale, and Pat's a lot closer to the "being able to see details" side)
we're kind of a collection of things we like. as a polymorph, Pat doesn't naturally have a "base form", so kie made one using bits and pieces of things kie liked in art or people's characters and over time kinda smoothed it out. kie used to look like this:
...which was awkward when people would offer to draw people's otherkinselves and Pat would hold this up.
we also have a lot of fictives that are either straight up how they look in canon, or point at a specific fan design and go "that's me", or "i look like this, but", or just generally deviate from their "original" design over time. or are a special circumstance, like Pat being two fictives jammed together to create something that looks nothing like either of kir halves and also has kir own complicated backstory
for the rest of us, it's very... tactile? figuring myself out has been a matter of focusing on how i feel when i'm in front and piecing it out from there. and then the rest of it is just from drawing.
this is from a silly diagram i made, and is like. my rough first impression of myself. i felt very autumn colors (the leaves were starting to turn and we got a new flannel coat with oranges and browns) so i tried a calico kinda deal that didn't quite feel right. messy hair is spot-on, although i keep forgetting to draw it this level of messy. the ears and antennae are carry-overs from Leo, who i split from, but again it just didn't feel right.
whenever i had downtime i'd be zoning out on walks or whatever and just taking note of how i felt. the tail was kinda the most obvious part. i'd say "so was the mask", but it actually... wasn't? there's a version of this where i actually drew myself with a "human" face and it was so deeply unsettling and distressing on an instinctive level that it got me to realize "wait, it's not just that i still have a mask motif, my face is literally the mask". there's nothing under there.
after that, Pat was drawing a group picture and was working with me to figure out more details: refining the mask a little more, figuring out my ears and the hairstyle i wanted, markings, and overall vibe. Pat drew me with a mouth for expression purposes, but i don't actually have one
and all of that culminated in this drawing of me i really like. figured out markings a little more (and drew myself without a bandana for once), gave myself big eyebrows, and just managed to pull together a vibe that fully fit me and how i wanted people to picture me. looking at this makes me really happy :,)
there's some of us we still don't fully know what they look like. (sorry, Sig.) and we also fluctuate a lot - Tobias never gets drawn the same way twice. and if we're struggling to draw ourselves just going off Personal Vibe, another Leo is usually able to step in to help hash things out, like Pat drawing me. and also it's fun seeing the way we interpret each other.
look at this drawing Sec did of Pat. it's so sick. we're still not over it. that's Pat!! hell, that's drawn by one of us just going off mental image of the Leo in co-front with them. it's awesome
