Travel Log: V Year 2019 Day 144
Cotopaxi Volcano
I have much to catch up on, but climbing this was today’s adventure. Cotopaxi is one of the many volcanos in the Avenue of Volcanoes in Ecuador. There’s a total of 84 volcanoes in the country. Cotopaxi is the second tallest and is active. It’s last major eruption was in the late 1800s, but technically the last eruption was in 2015 where it spewed smoke and ash but no lava. Cotopaxi is not typically this clear, so I was extremely lucky today to have such a clear day, not only to see all of Cotopaxi but also many of the surrounding volcanos. Even the local guide was shocked. The day started out raining, but it started clearing as the car entered the park. Then, the clouds literally moved off to reveal the volcano and only got clearer from there.

Rumiñahui volcano
The hike up Cotopaxi is strenuous. I consider myself in decent shape as I exercise regularly, but I found this climb challenging. It’s cold (5 degrees Celsius today), very windy, snowy, and at high altitude. Cotopaxi is one of the tallest active volcanos in the world.
Conditions are so harsh, this is the only stuff that can grow there.
Stopping to admire the view, take photos, and catch my breath
Almost there

I would rate coming to Cotopaxi National Park and climbing the volcano one of my top 5 travel memories. The experience was like none other, I even got emotional. I am so grafeful for today.
