Tuesday 20th January 2026
The day began with a 3 mile run before 8am. Already the temperatures were rising sharply and I found it best to navigate the shade. Martine opted for YouTube online pilates. The outdoor culture is so evident in Australia, with many at that time of day also exercising, on the beach or enjoying breakfast, or just a coffee in the many high street cafes. It is plain to see why Brits who have emigrated here, say this is what they like about the place. What they may not like is the cost of housing. Any modest property within sniffing distance of the ocean here in Fremantle, will set you back more than 2 million dollars. Halve that for pounds. That's serious money, leaving many searching down the sides of the sofa.
The thought was, today, take it easy doing admin type things this morning, then, after lunch, head for one of our favourite places, Cottesloe, four stops away by train. It's quite interesting that many people say, oh, my brother, sister, nephew, niece, painter, roofer: tick one of the above, moved to Perth. Oh, where abouts? Oh, its a little place outside Perth, Cottesloe I think it's called. We have had that discussion many times. And yet, Cottesloe is really quite a small but fetching place. I don't really know why we like it so much. We just do. We have visited many times. It has a beach; not the best in Australia but very presentable nonetheless, with the green grassy park areas running down to the white-sand beach. It has a large golf course leading down to the coast road. And it has a fish and chip shop. Well, it did in 2019; it appears to have been knocked down in our absence. Not all bad news though, a new one has risen phoenix like from the ashes, which when fully tested, earned full marks. And so it was, we did all the things in the same order, exactly as we have done many times before, and it was all just as enjoyable as ever. It was SO hot today, though, we really were beginning to feel seriously dehydrated. A big reminder to take a lot of fluids with us at all times. A sign on a bus stop was there to remind the most forgetful what to do: Slip, Slap, Slop, Seek, Slide. Slip on a shirt, slap on the sun screen, slop on a hat, seek shade and slide on the sunnies. Oddly, nothing about drinking, but hey ho.
The walk from the station via Coles seemed twice as far today, but we made it back for ice-cream and yoghurt, washed down with SB. Great day.
