“What are we going to build this time, Papa?” Felix asked, staring over the wood glue, crafting scalpels, and sheets of balsa wood laid carefully out over a cutting mat on the ornate table. The silence of the dungeon-depths of the Richter library was unmatched, and gave no opportunity for distraction.

“What would you like to build?” His father’s voice rumbled deep and warm beside him.

Felix kept his gaze on the table, imagining invisible shapes and structures, and then smiled as he settled on one. “A great tower!”

“Why?”

Felix’s smile faded. He concentrated on the table and the crafting supplies again, trying to envision his idea more clearly. “Umm…”

“Why do we build towers, Felix? A structure must have a purpose for existing.”

Felix grimaced and looked up at the badly weathered sign on top of the building, proclaiming ‘Badham Preschool’ in toy spelling blocks before they walked beneath the awning and it disappeared. As Ace strolled through the front door and into the dimly lit building, Felix stopped and glanced over his shoulder past Nea. He scanned the abandoned street beyond the chain link fence, searching absently for a dark shadow or a glimpse of a gray jacket.

Nea looked up at him with a questioning brow.

“Lo siento, bello, but it has to be done. Now come on. We’ll watch out for ya.”

His entire body shuddered and then seized as his mind began to spiral with the final moments of his previous life, the memories like knives peppering every millimeter of skin and stabbing into his heart. Hey! Coping-hard-edelic here! So uh… this chapter is really, really dark and depressing, so if you're in not in a good headspace (and I imagine most people aren't right now), please don't feel obligated to read it. This chapter has multiple explicit scenes and something else at the end that could be highly triggering. I did my best to bracket those sections with warnings-- one ⚠ for the start of it and two ⚠⚠ for the end of the section if you want to skip them. If you want a full disclosure of the warnings with spoilers, you can find that in the end notes.

Alright, so... after what happened with the election, my mental health is kinda trash right now. Oddly enough, it doesn't really keep me from writing shit like this, but it does make it a good deal harder. I've been kind of wanting to take a bit of a break from this story anyways since I've been working on it for almost two straight years, so I think now is probably a good time to do that. The holidays are kind of a trash time to post anyways, so I'd estimate sometime in January is when I'll update this again. That DOESN'T mean I'm going to stop writing though. I'll probably still end up inevitably working on this story a bit since I can't stay away from it, but I've also had a few ideas bouncing around inside my head for a while now. One of those involves David and a kitten, and I KNOW how much we could all use a bit of fluff in our lives right now, so be on the look out for that! 🐱

In the mean time, I'll be getting my ducks in a row and basking in the schadenfreude that is r/leopardsatemyface and I hope you'll join me there! Chapter 29 Delay + Future delays

Hey folks, just here to let you all know that not only is Chapter 29 delayed, but that the next couple chapters will also probably end up being delayed as well! :'D The current chapter is taking a bit more time to write than usual and I've also been playing too much DBD pretty busy. 😆 In all seriousness though, I will be taking some extra things onto my plate for the next several months. That means I might not have as much time to write, so don't be surprised if I don't post on time. 😩 When I do post though, it will still be around the usual time on Fridays! Hopefully I'm just being overly cautious here, but I thought it'd be better to just give a head's up just in case so you all aren't left wondering!
