Hof van Hoogstraten in Brussels was the residence of Antoine I de Lalaing (1480-1540), 1st count of Hoogstraten and of Culemborg. De Lalaing was an important nobleman in the Burgundian/Habsburg Netherlands. He served as chamberlain to Philip the Fair (1478-1506) and his son Charles V (1500-1558), became a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1516 and was appointed stadholder of Holland and Zeeland in 1522. Of his grand house in Brussels only a few parts have survived such as the gallery (1). The Coudenberg Palace was enlarged and remodelled several times. Charles V (1500-1558) ordered the construction of a new chapel around 1522. The chapel survived the fire of 1731 but was demolished later in the 18th century. Only the lowest level with its massive octagonal columns (1) survived. The Rue Isabelle (3-4) ran alongside this chapel and the previously mentioned Aula Magna. The Coudenberg Palace was the main residence in Brussels of the Burgundian and Habsburg rulers of the Low Countries. The palace was destroyed by fire in 1731 but some (underground) parts survived and can be visited. One of its most magnificent structures was the Aula Magna, building of which was started in 1452 for Philip the Good (1396-1467). 1-4 show the remnants of this once grand hall. The keystones (1) that once adorned the vault, bear the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The collapsed floor can be seen on photo 4.
