Tony found out May died a week after it happened. And it was because he asked where Happy was cause he hadn't seen him. Apparently, he took off when he found out and didn't tell Tony in his rush. He knew that following him to California took a strain on the on and off dating Happy and May had going on. But they always remained close even after the move.
