Today in illustrated Count of Monte Cristo: Lesbians!
What a great picture of Eugenie. She looks ready to murder a man.
I should turn off my computer and go to bed
But first, here’s Franz and Albert kissing talking kissing.
....no.
Last chance for everyone to talk me out of Revenge Sandwich and CoMC17 as the readalong title and tag respectively.
What edition/translation of Monte Cristo would you recommend getting? (I've never read it before, super excited for the readalong!)

I’m officially recommending the Penguin Classics edition with Robin Buss’ translation. I have never read it before, but it’s the one I’m planning on using for this readalong. The reviews say that’s it’s a very readable modern translation, and unlike the anonymous 19th century translations (which most editions use) it doesn’t bowdlerize and secretly cut out the most scandalous bits.
I also want to advise you to be careful in selecting an edition because many abridged editions do not advertise themselves as such! Caveat empetor! If it’s under 1000 pages it’s probably abridged, unless the pages are very big and/or the font is very small. Abridged editions often run in the 600-700 page range, which makes them look substantial but they are lies (unless they clearly say they’re abridged, in which case they are being honest but still not what you want).

my favorite part of this picture is the man on the left who looks Very Concerned that pretty lady is gonna cut a bitch
I think that’s her father, and he is concerned because he knows his daughter. This is a distinct possibility.
(There’s a scene where her fiance is talking to a friend, and the friend says something about how lucky the fiance is to be engaged to a woman in the mold of Diana, and the fiance responds that he’s afraid of meeting the fate of Actaeon. LEGIT.)

I love Eugenie so much

I do love her, confirmed.
We are all in love with Eugenie. It is a universal condition u_u
(I didn’t even post some of the best bits because I’m now making a nominal effort to cut down on spoilers. The bit about the shield around the breast of Sappho is always hilarious though - like Dumas basically just took a big red pen and wrote the word “LESBIAN!!” in the margins.)
