Description
In 1606, Earl Arundel (1586–1646) married Alathea Talbot, the sole heiress of the wealthy Earl of Shrewsbury. The magnificently dressed couple points to the globe, on which Madagascar is recognizable. In 1639, Arundel intended to colonize this island - the famous portrait, the first version of which remained in the family's possession, is known as the "Madagascar Portrait." The two sculptures in the background represent the Earl's significant art collection.
