my feelings on count olaf are very complex. I think about him and kit snicket and la forza del destino and i'm like 'wow, he's such a complicated and tragic character! vfd turned him into a tortured, torturing shell of a man fixated on revenge, but even in his depravity, there is still a faint glimmer of humanity. things could have been different for him, in a better world, but that's not how the story goes'. and then I think about him and violet baudelaire and i'm like 'he needs to be repeatedly hit with tiny hammers until he is dead'

Just saw someone point out that Sunny Baudelaire probably knew more about Olaf than her own parents

thinking about how at the end of penultimate peril pt. one when the baudelaire children are trying to stop count olaf from shooting the harpoon gun and they say "you dont have to do this" and he looks at them with defeat in his eyes and tells them "its all i know how to do" because this story is written before they can even live it out and and of course violet, klaus, and sunny are doomed by the narrative but for a second you realize that so is count olaf.

No matter how much time passes, I'll still periodically return to the universe of ASoUE and draw something.

And recently I had an epiphany. I remembered the final credits of the movie (2004), and I somehow wildly wanted to see such a cartoon. I think that ASoUE are ideal for adaptation in animation, especially in the style of these very credits.

This inspired me to draw their world literally out of paper. I imagine cutout animation where everything is intentionally made out of paper, cardboard, wallpaper and other materials that burn easily 😏

The Baudelaires are children's drawings on scraps of book pages. Olaf is a doll from a paper puppet theater. Aunt Josephine consists of calligraphic elements, and Esme is made of clippings from fashion magazines. And so on.

I also imagine how the logic of the world adapts to the material from which it is made. For example, paper gets wet and swells when in contact with real water, and cut things can be glued together with glue or tape, if you find them between the pages.

In general, I would like to develop and think about everything that is shown in the credits further. Imho, this is a very creative visual and a fresh basis for interpreting events

I really appreciate how, right off the bat, The Bad Beginning shows how genuinely evil Olaf is. It doesn’t build to him laying his hands on Klaus or trying to keep Violet as a child bride- it just happens. He’s not a villain ‘driven to extreme lengths’ in the Baudelarie’s story. he’s just evil and always has been to them.

Idk, I find it easy to get swept up in his theatrics and costumes in some of the middle seasons/books and it sort of softens his murder threats. They still feel real, the severity of them just gets lost. But for the first book, when it’s just him in his plain clothes, you are clearly shown how awful he is, so you can’t actually ever forgot what he would do to those kids.
