Stormy nights in the castle were tricky for Valerie. She never slept at night anymore, and the storms used to help her sleep as a child, and now they made her calm. But, she always had puddles and mud to deal with the next day in the opened parts of the castle that hadn’t been repaired yet. And to keep her thoughts from the inevitable clean up of the next day, she read to relax.
And there was no place she preferred to read more than in front of the painting of the first wife of her great grandfather. The portrait, once in the halls, had the nicest room in the castle, and during the day it received the most light. She found it fitting for the poor human woman who had caused so much pain within herself and her husband, who later became undead. As she sat infront of it, reading an old journal when Val was about eight, she smiled as she was sucked into a feeling of happiness, which distracted her from the shadows moving in the dark.
