Vintage photo from 1933 of hobo encampment.
As Douglard Splattsoer, Chief of Police of Ephrata, Idaho, also owned a struggling sign shop, there were a good many unnecessary signs tacked up all over town, like this ordinance criminalizing cook fires, cauldrons and witches’ spells for hobos encamped at the Cornwell County Dump and Reservoir.
FUN FACT: Baby Gruenwald never sued the Chief of Police for signs placed randomly around Ephrata calling him a “talentless quasi-infant” and a “floor crawling un-American midget,” but his lawyers’ letter threatening such a lawsuit resulted in the signs quick disappearance.
