The San Luis Obispo County Planning & Building Department is offering an exciting career opportunity for Resource Protection Specialist I. Resource Protection Specialist I is part of a career series for Resource Protection Specialist I, II and III. Classes in this series perform code and permit enforcement activities, protect natural resources, conduct field evaluations in the unincorporated areas of the County for possible violations of County code relating to land use and building code regulations and ordinances; prepare evaluation reports and compliance recommendations to appointed and elected boards and to the District Attorney; prepare and execute inspection and search warrants; coordinate enforcement activities to obtain compliance with State and local codes; administer Neighborhood Preservation programs county wide and make oral presentations to community groups and schools.

The incumbent in this position will be a well-organized multi-tasker, be able to manage a large caseload and learn the numerous codes administrated. He or she will also be responsible for research, project management of individual cases and for processing discretionary permits, collaborating in the interpretation of laws and conditions and writing numerous reports. Strong writing and communication skills are a requirement. Most of our work is educating the public and working with individuals to bring about compliance with the law. We practice Neighborhood Preservation concepts and staff spend a lot of time interacting with the public, both individually and in groups. Public speaking to small and large groups is a common task and staff often attends night meetings. The incumbent will have citation authority and will coordinate with Federal, State and local law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
Minimum requirements for this position:
Either A: completion of two years of schooling from an accredited college in natural resource management, city and regional planning, environmental studies, criminal justice, police science or related field; OR B: two years performing code enforcement related work consisting of the evaluation or inspection of violations of laws, codes or ordinances in a public agency; OR C: three years of experience in technical planning work, natural resource management (if non-enforcement related work), or performing building inspection activities in a public agency.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
Completion of P.O.S.T. approved Penal Code 832 Level III reserve training will be required prior to completion of the probationary period.
