It’s occurred to me that nobody on tumblr’s talking about Coupon Carl, and I’m here to fix that.
On July 14, 2018, Coupon Carl (Morry Matson), a white cashier working at a Chicago CVS, called the police on a black woman named Camilla Hudson for - get this - a coupon.
Yes, you heard me right. A coupon. When Hudson handed him a manufacturer’s coupon (she tried to self-checkout, but the machine wasn’t programmed to accept coupons), he accused her of forging it, claiming that he’d never seen a coupon like it before.
Welcome to the United States of America, folks. This is the year 2018, and we’re calling the cops for coupons we don’t recognise.
Funnily enough, he tried to call the police twice. The first time, they hung up on him, because even they realised how absurd the whole thing was. The second time, they sent three police officers, who talked to Hudson and promptly left.
But the best part of this all?
A few years ago, Coupon Carl got in trouble for voter fraud. He’d tried to petition to expand a waterfront bike path near his home to the beach, trying to placate racist petitioners by claiming that the expansion would not create an influx of “people from the South Side”. When he didn’t get enough signatures, he decided to forge them. In fact, at least five of the 13 pages of the signed petition that was submitted contained signatures forged by him. It’s funny how the world works.
Remember, it’s not just white women. For all the Permit Pattys and Barbecue Beckys out there, there’s also a Coupon Carl, because racism has no gender. : )
There’s a video about it here
