#course kit

Hi all! I was just wondering if there are copies of this years course kits (basically all subjects) in the library? I wanted to photocopy them because I don't have enough money to spend on the actual kit itself. Thanks, appreciate it.

You should confirm with your prof but usually, yes there should be 1-2 copies on reserves. 

Alternatively you could also look up the articles on the library or Google Scholar. Chances are 90% of the required readings will be on there, in pdf format or whatever.

Does the bookstore charge tax on course kits? If so, is it 5% or 13%?

I can’t recall actually, but yes I believe so..? The tax is 5%.

So one of my courses requires a course kit and I was wondering if it would matter if I bought the course kit from a previous student of the same professor. I haven't dealt with course kits before and I'm not sure if there would be differences between this year's and last year's. I figured as long as it's by the same teacher it should be okay, or am I wrong? Thanks in advance!

Nah, it should be fine as long as you’ve compared the two course kits and see that they’re similar. I’ve bought old course kits before too and never had an issue.

Oh, so even if we're saying that the article is from the course kit, we still use the author of the article? Alright, thanks so much! :)

Just think of it as a chapter from an anthology and cite it as such.

how do you cite course kits? you know how theres usually the course kit page number like at the bottom of the page, or is it the citation already given for each article???? I asked my TA and he doesn't even know..

That’s sort of tricky. Course kits are usually a compilation of different articles, so if you’re using a particular article then I’d recommend citing just that.

If you want to cite the overall course kit, I’d suggest treating it like citing a textbook, where you can say the publisher is York University, North York ON.

I went last week and this week to the bookstore and they didn't have my course kit how do I ask someone if i can photocopy the parts we were supposed to read this week and the part next week because I don't know if I can find it, and the bookstore said it can take up to two weeks (At glendon) to make another one and that was two weeks ago tbh I don't know what to do how do i ask someone because I can't fall behind in this class

When you go to class, turn to the person beside you and ask: “can I please photocopy parts of your course kit because mine is on order and won’t be here for another two weeks. You can come with me to the library and I’ll photocopy it there, it’ll just take 2 minutes”. This way you’re not really taking the book away from them, and they’ll be more inclined to say yes since you’re photocopying right in front of them.

If you cannot find anyone at all, then please talk to your professor and explain the situation - maybe he/she can work something out for you.

I thought about suggesting that too, but the thing is that profs don’t normally put course kits on reserve at the library. It’s worth a try though. :)

You can ask them to order more if they’re out.

In the meanwhile, you can ask someone to borrow their course kit and photocopy it while you wait for your course kit to arrive.
