Courtright Reservoir and Shaver Lake đź’™
Tucked away in the Sierra National Forest, Courtright Reservoir and Shaver Lake offer a serene escape from the city. The reservoir was created in 1958 with the construction of the Courtright Dam, and Shaver Lake was named after Yosemite explorer Charles Shaver. This reservoir sits at an elevation of 8,170ft!

Recreational activities around in the area:
‣ Hiking and backpacking through the scenic trails of the Sierra National Forest
‣ Camping under the stars at one of the many campsites
‣ Wildlife viewing, with deer, bears, and other wildlife calling the area home
‣ Boating and water sports on Shaver Lake
‣ Fishing for trout and other species, including:
- Rainbow trout
- Brook trout
- Brown trout
- Smallmouth bass
One of the most striking aspects of Courtright Reservoir and Shaver Lake is the profound sense of calm that pervades the area. The water is glassy still, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. The world seems to slow down, and the silence is almost palpable. It's the perfect place to unwind and connect with nature. I kayaked along the water and I even found myself napping on a rock in the sun, soaking up the warmth like a lizard.
While Courtright Reservoir itself may not hold spiritual significance, the surrounding Sierra National Forest has cultural and spiritual importance to the indigenous peoples of the region. The forest is home to many sacred sites and traditional cultural landscapes!
Getting to Courtright Reservoir and Shaver Lake is relatively easy! The lakes are located approximately 50 miles east of Fresno, CA, and can be accessed via Highway 168 and Dinkey Creek Road.
Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a nature lover, or just looking for a peaceful getaway, Courtright Reservoir and Shaver Lake are definitely worth a visit.
As always, respect the land and leave it cleaner than you found it 🫶🏻
