You know what I would like? To find an amazing book of interviews about and photos of people’s breasts and not have the artist turn out to be a terf, libertarian, and anti-social distancing and masking. Would be so nice. Alas.

I was just re-reading a fanfiction that last updated in 2022, and I decided to go looking for the author. Thankfully it seems they're still alive, but apparently in 2023 they developed Long COVID and combined with other life factors it seems to have arrested a lot of their creative work.

This fic is over 700k, one of the most popular in its fandom; they've been posting it since 2012, and since it's so intricately plotted and researched and carefully written (including a conlang the fic author made up themself) I imagine they were working on it well before even that. 10 years between the first posted chapter and the last; maybe 14 or 15 full years, now, since they started working on it. In an author's note, they described it as one of their life's great works. Obviously chronic illness is always unfair, but I can't help but feel outraged on their behalf, and for everyone like them who's still living with the consequences of a pandemic that most people consider to be over. By 2023, even if we hadn't eradicated the virus we could have managed the spread and prevented so many reinfections if we'd maintained testing and masking protocols. Instead we dropped all monitoring and precautions, and 2023 and 2024 had much higher wastewater levels than the years most people consider 'the pandemic'.

How many vulnerable people lost their lives to those preventable infections? And even if the vaccine and Paxlovid helped push down deaths, how many more are still unable to carry on their life's great works today?

We as individuals can't stop everyone from getting infected. If you stopped taking precautions, that's understandable; there's been a lot of confusing information floating around. But you can start masking again, and you should. You can start caring again, and you should.

After a quiet early summer, wastewater levels are ticking up again. But every infection point we cut off, by masking or testing or just staying home when we're sick, helps flatten the next peak a little bit more.

I'm not going to polish this post any more because it's mostly just me being just. so exhausted with fury. But please: protect yourself, and your community. Wear a mask.
