"With Americans being advised to brace for a difficult winter amid skyrocketing coronavirus infection rates and the economic recovery nearly stalled, the near-term outlook is grim. More than 20 million Americans are on some form of unemployment assistance, and 12 million will run out of benefits the day after Christmas unless new relief materializes. Though lawmakers have made progress this week on a $908 billion bill, details are still being worked out, congressional aides said. ....... Meanwhile, an estimated 54 million Americans will struggle with hunger this year, a 45 percent increase from 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With food aid programs like SNAP and WIC being reduced, and other federal assistance on the brink of expiration, food banks and pantries are being inundated, reporting hours-long waits and lines that stretch into the thousands."
This is...just so fucking inhumane.
If you or anyone you know struggles with food insecurity, the following resources may be of some help:
Dial 2-1-1 on any phone, and you can connect with resources for food banks and pantries in your local area.
Food Not Bombs has chapters around the world that regularly serve hot vegan and vegetarian meals to anyone who wants to eat. Check their map for local chapters to you!
Chilis on Wheels is a similar collective, albeit with a smaller reach. They deliver hot meals and supplies to locals in need
A local resource to me (Montgomery County, MD) is Manna Food Center.
FoodPantries.org: search by state.
Please feel free to reblog with any other resources y’all know of!

VAMPTEMBER DAY 14: "Free Day"
I'm finally ready to share this.
During the winter of 2019/2020 I worked in a COVID-19 isolation unit, and to keep myself from disintegrating mentally, I invented the "Zodiac Friends" to entertain my fellow nurses and drew a little comic to show how COVID-19 was affecting their little town--with an emphasis on Victor the Vampire and his little Vanessa at their store, the "Virgo Mart."
This whole comic was drawn while I was in isolation using scraps of paper and Sharpies, hence the unpolished quality. For reading clarity, I replaced my original hand-written dialogue with typed text, and used the computer to arrange the panels into a form easy to read on Tumblr.
If there's sufficient interest, I may post my unfinished Part 2 that I began when I had to go BACK into isolation during the Winter/Spring of 2021.
im surprised no one’s posted this yet but arin and dan referring to the virus as the “backstreet boys reunion tour” is the funniest thing to come out of all of this
Edinburgh Castle at the end of a "Global Rainbow" this evening. A beacon of remembrance marking a year since we went into lockdown, remembering all those lost, but also as a optimistic look ahead to a brighter future. The rainbow celebrates the heroes on the front line that have kept us safe, the ongoing work of the NHS staff and key workers across the country. We thank you!
