The Cow Ghost of West Virginia

West Virginia University was established in 1867, known mostly for agriculture. In its early years a tragedy happened that haunts the university to this day. 

This is the Woodburn Hall Cow Ghost. 

West Virginia University started as an agriculture school and had plenty of livestock. It’s said that a group of students got it in their head to play a prank on the school. They thought the perfect place would be in the clocktower in Woodburn Hall, where everyone would see. 

So one night they stole an entire cow from the farm on campus and led it to Woodburn Hall, and slowly but surely they got it inside and up the stairs. When the clock struck midnight the cow became frightened and started mooing as loud as possible. It’s reported that people were amused to hear mooing from the clock tower, but that amusement soon faded when they heard the group of students couldn’t get it back down. 

No matter how hard they tried the poor frightened cow refused to go down the stairs. Eventually it was decided that they would have to kill the cow and take the body down piece by piece. 

Many report hearing the cows frightened mooes echoing around Woodburn Hall at night, haunting the university that lead it to its death.
