Cow Slaughter Ban ====================
Origins of Cow Slaughter:
The government of India set up a committee to look into a ban on cow slaughter because of a movement that was pushing for it. It was chaired by a former chief justice of India, Justice A.K. Sarkar. Golwalkar, the Shankaracharya of Puri and Dr Verghese Kurien (the milk man of India) were members of the committee.
Golwalkar and Kurien became friends over the course of these meetings which is when Golwalkar confided in Kurien that he only started this whole cow ban movement to irritate the government.
Kurien in this autobiography “I too had a dream” and devotes 4 pages (181 - 185) speaking about his friendship with Golwalkar and mentions this anecdote. Kurien also noted that that he didnt support Golwalkar on cow slaughter ban cause it didnt make any sense.
However this does make one question Golwalkar’s patriotism.
That at a time when India was still vulnerable and trying to find its feet, he decides that it would be fun to irritate the government by starting a movement to put a ban on cow slaughter even though he himself didn’t fully subscribe to it.
This movement obviously has taken a life form of its own with too many unnecessary killings for what started as a joke and we are still paying for it.
