This is our car after Pimp My Ride
The first time I came to Davis, I saw this cow car. The car fit my vision of the town of Davis perfectly: a small town with lots of cows, farmers, bikes, and college students. My definition of Davis was shaped by the stereotypical perspective of the town. When I began attending UC Davis as a freshman, I began to see that these stereotypes are basically all true. There are lots of cows, especially on the campus near the Tercero student dorms. One can smell the pungent aroma of manure wafting through the air some days on campus. Farms are spattered around the borders of the town, with many farmers selling their produce at the biweekly farmer’s markets downtown. In fact, my cousin who lives in Davis and currently attends Davis Senior High took me to her friend’s farm recently. The small farm consisted of a few horses, a llama, some produce, and a tiny vineyard. Bicycles are the main mode of transportation. Bikes are so prevalent, that there are probably more bikes than cars in Davis. I was surprised to find that there are even traffic laws for riding bikes, and that one can get tickets for not stopping at a stop sign or riding without a bike light. The last stereotype I had of Davis also turned out to be true. There are TONS of college students (33,300 currently). My cousin tells me that when summertime comes around and all of the college students return to their homes, Davis is much quieter.
Although I have found that all of these stereotypes about the town have turned out to be true, I have also discovered a lot of interesting facets about the culture of Davis that I never knew existed. Like who knew that such a tiny town would have over 15 art galleries? And what about all of the ethnic food downtown? I personally believe that the culture of Davis has been partially shaped by the college and the variety of students that reside in the town for most of the year. With the diversity of the college campus, there are opportunities for people to experience different cultures and for the ethnic restaurants downtown to thrive. There are so many places in Davis to explore, and I have only been to a few of them so far in my first quarter of freshman year. Through this blog, I will share my experiences in discovering the culture of Davis.
