These are the fragrant yellow flowers of Corylopsis sinensis var. sinensis 'Spring Purple' (Chinese winter hazel, cowslip bush) which is a spreading, deciduous shrub. The cultivar name comes new leaves that are tinged purple. This plant thrives with an acidic, fertile, moist but well drained soil ideally in dappled shade as exposure to full sun can cause leaf scorching in dry conditions.
