Coyote/a in New Mexican History

Okay so I mentioned in THIS post that I was trying to figure out what ‘coyote/a’ meant on my great-great etc. grandparent wedding record and that I asked my grandma and did some basic digging and came up with the initial answer of “Coyote = person of mixed Spanish and something else decent”

It turns out the actual answer is FAR more complicated and, because it is literally my heritage I decided to write this up and share my finding.

I am putting this under a cut but WARNING: derogatory terms are used in some of these sources since it talks about the Spanish caste system so proceed with caution and understand that a lot of these terms are still derogatory. Almost all of this is just text from sources (sources attached) and then a summery at the end.

From this we can assume that the caste system had a place in New Mexico is some way, but compared to what was seen in the rest of ‘New Spain’ it likely changed and definitions may have been used in a more broader sense than elsewhere so was we really need to do is look at the definition of coyote specifically in New Mexico

About the term Coyote:

Coyote in New Mexico and the complications there in

The above is the definition of Coyote from LINK which is a dictionary or Northern New Mexico Spanish.

Which defines Coyote as 1) someone who is Hispanic-Anglo which and 2) someone who was raised by their grandparents which is reasonable and might explain why my ancestors were labeled ‘coyote’ but I decided to do more digging by specifying genealogy in my search and got:

We get contradicting sources which paint two very different pictures of this term.

Because of this I decided at some of the other people that had been labeled as 'Coyote/a’ and see if they had more information and:

 a woman who is labeled a coyota of Zuñi (a pueblo in West NM) which hints that she was at least partially native.

 Another woman who was labeled BOTH mestiza and coyote which, again, suggests that coyote might be used interchangeably OR that she was Native-Spanish-European

 And:

A man who is, again, labeled as both a coyote and mestiza.

So what we can get from this is that

1)     Coyote was likely used MOSTLY to denote someone who was Native-Spanish

2)     This MIGHT have been to distinguish between Native-Spanish kids that were born into marriages (Mestizo) vs. those that were not (Coyote)

3)     It MIGHT have been used to distinguish New Mexico Native-Spanish kids from Mexico-Spanish kids.

4)     It MIGHT have been to denote Native-Spanish kids born to native slaves.

5)     It MIGHT have been used to denote Native-Spanish kids who were more native then Spanish

6)     At some point this term (apparently) expanded to European-Spanish kids though when and why is unknown (to me).

And NOW! Because I ended up finding this mess in this search: Lets talk about white appropriation of terms that not belong to them because they think is sound ‘cool!!!’

And the point of it all: YUP “Everyone is a Coyote so we should get rid of all cultures!!”

Just…woooooowwwwww.

Thankfully I’m not the only person to find this group of people to be disgusting (and they have apparently don’t SO MUCH WORSE TOO) so I’ll leave this here along with the source and just WOW.
