last things i will say about this manatreed situation. how do you read that twitlonger and immediately jump to the conclusion “poor manatreed, we just cost an innocent guy a career” when dream explicitly never confirmed that. if anything he said he would never KNOWINGLY support an abuser (thank god) and that responding is hard to navigate because of doxes of him and his family. i wish people would be more respectful with their words and realize this was never confirmed to be a “fake accusations” case - and can you imagine being the victim, the person who has been MOST harmed first by the abuse in question and then by doxxers bringing it to millions of people, and seeing tweet after tweet saying “poor manatreed! we cost an innocent guy his career!” like that was the main takeaway at all?

if the accusations about manatreed are false (not that I’m saying they Are, but If) then this is going to be some sort of event horizon with the harassment of creators online.

the only way for manatreed to prove his innocence is to doxx himself. if he is innocent then this means that someone can, at any point, force another person to put themselves in danger to prove their innocence against an accusation that could ruin their life. that might Still follow them forever even after they prove their innocence. purely on a whim.

if manatreed is guilty, then the fact still remains that Several innocent people were doxxed. the victim of the abuse was doxxed, dream’s little sister (an innocent party and a Minor) was doxxed. these are two vulnerable people who were hurt in service of ruining someone (or someones) minecraft career.

it is Undeniable that this happened because manatreed joined a minecraft server to become a minecraft streamer. this is two guaranteed innocent victims with upwards of two more, who can’t prove their innocence without further putting themselves in danger.

regardless of where this situation goes from here, this should not have happened. not in this way.

I’m not going to comment on a lot of the stuff going on on twitter right now regarding manatreed & Dream, because there seems to be a fuck ton of misinformation and I don’t feel like spending 12 hours digging through all of it to figure out the truth.

What I do I want to say, from the perspective of someone who has a long history with online security & faking information is the following:

Screenshots of any kind of text/social media posts are trivially easy to fake. There are websites that will do it for you, but even just putting in minimal effort allows someone to fake one such that it is indistinguishable from a real one. Do not treat screenshots of text or social media posts as any kind of evidence on their own.

Ask: who is providing this information? Why are they providing it? Do they have a vested interest in lying to me? What do they hope to gain from this?

If the source of the information has actively hostile intents, then you need to be significantly more critical of the information provided. Assume that you are being lied to unless proof is provided otherwise.

Pause and consider information that is being stated as a fact. “This is clearly x’s account” “This is y’s phone number” etc etc.

How do they know that? Is that an actual fact that has been confirmed by any trusted source or is it just their word? What would prevent this party who has hostile intents from just saying “this is y’s phone number” or “this is clearly x’s account”?

Again, assume that if a party has hostile intent, they are going to lie to you.

Take a deep breath, remember your critical thinking skills, and remember to take a step back if you think you’re getting too wrapped up in the situation.
