Wendy’s CEO Kirk Tanner Named New CEO of The Hershey Company
Leadership shuffle marks major transition in both the fast food and confectionery industries.
In a notable executive move, Kirk Tanner, CEO of Wendy’s, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of The Hershey Company. The leadership transition will take effect on August 18, 2025, and marks a significant shift as Hershey prepares for a new chapter under Tanner’s guidance.
Tanner will succeed Michele Buck, who is stepping down after nearly two decades at Hershey, including almost eight impactful years as CEO. Buck, who has been instrumental in driving Hershey’s growth and innovation in the snacks and sweets segment, will continue serving as an advisor to the company until the end of the year.
From Fast Food to Chocolate: A Strategic Return to CPG
Kirk Tanner took the helm at Wendy’s in 2024 following an impressive three-decade tenure at PepsiCo. At PepsiCo, he led the North American beverages unit and gained deep experience in consumer packaged goods (CPG), mergers and acquisitions, and operational leadership.
His appointment is seen as a strategic return to his roots in the CPG sector.
“Kirk is a proven, high-impact leader in the food and beverage industry with a great combination of customer and consumer passion, commercial acumen and operational scale,” said Mary Kay Haben, director and chair of Hershey’s CEO search committee. “His deep experience in snacks, beverages, M&A and innovation—combined with public company CEO and board roles—makes him well suited to lead Hershey into the future.”
What’s Next for Wendy’s?
As Tanner prepares to take the reins at Hershey, Wendy’s has already announced a leadership transition of its own. Chief Financial Officer Ken Cook will serve as interim CEO when Tanner officially steps down on July 18.
Cook, who has been Wendy’s CFO since early 2024, brings extensive leadership experience from his previous roles at UPS and is expected to ensure a stable transition as the company searches for its next permanent leader.
Industry Watchers React
This move comes at a time of significant evolution for both Hershey and Wendy’s. With Tanner's expertise in scaling large consumer brands and driving innovation, stakeholders and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how his leadership will shape Hershey’s next era.
Meanwhile, Wendy’s will look to maintain momentum under interim leadership as it continues its transformation in a competitive fast food market.

"The elevator to recovery is closed, please use the steps."
Me: Wow, S, that's... kind of an amazing sign. Was that made for everyone at this rehab?
It's 2009 and Peg works night shifts at a busy Palm Beach drug rehab, with 30 day stays for something like $30k, where patients after being marketed to through stock photography of beaches and jet skis are now being corralled in by white limos. IDs and every detail from a person, checked in through paramedics.
Feels...like an adult summer camp? Peak "I'm going to rehab" reality with the producers running around, it's maybe funny but also your job while trying to plug away at school?
S, a Jamaican nurse always has her hands on her hips. She sucks her teeth.
S: No Peg, the elevator is broken again. Are you clocked in already? We had 4 AWOLs earlier and the techs are bringing them back now from a Publix so get ready to break down charts baby girl.
Me: Aw man not this again this week!
S: What did I tell you?
Me: In one ear out the other like RBG says?
S: No...
Me: My vagina is a temple?
S: Yes... but no.. baby girl.. you need something to your name!!!!!
Peg rolls her eyes, grabs stacks of charts, find a comfortable nursing unit on a top floor like a resort.
Did I learn the lesson?
No. Usually after that happened with S, I would try to DJ music where I could while scanning and breaking down medical records. (Tight crowd for a DJ set, mostly early on Lady Gaga, light Abba and a tiny bit of Elvis Crespo for dancing with my friends like I demand.)
Someone would lean over, every shift, asking the same.
"Can you cut off these filters?" (I had the scissors, safety first, you can't have scissors when you're all checked in paying tons of money to get better at this stage or in this setting.)
Then shortly, the lean over from an assortment of types from reality shows to randoms from youth, "Hey how did you get your job?"
(Parker Posey in House of Yes. Definitely do not watch it, very weird movie.)
How does the CPG Industry work? This CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) Industry primer from Primerli is designed to help professionals learn about the industry in under an hour. Consumer packaged goods, or CPG, refers to the industry segment that includes things that customers use on a daily basis. These items are mass-produced and have a relatively brief lifespan. CPG firms offer their products to retailers, who then sell them to consumers. Consumer packaged goods (CPGs) are industry terms for items that customers frequently use and replace. Food, beverages, cosmetics, and cleaning products are examples of consumer packaged goods. The learning concepts are created by a team of former consultants from McKinsey, BCG and Bain in collaboration with industry veterans with decades of experience. Together, they collaborate with a production team to create highly engaging, entertainment-quality content.
Some CPG companies invest up to 20 percent of their gross revenues on promotions, making it one of the largest items on the profit and loss (P&L).
