CPR Training
Good cardiopulmonary resuscitation training can help you save the life of a loved one, family member, stranger or friend. CPR training is effective in a number of emergency situations. CPR coupled with the usage of an automated external defibrillator (AED) drastically increases the chances of survival for a victim. Candidates that enroll with the Canadian Red Cross will receive the latest CPR and AED (cprandaed.ca) training methods and will practise these skill using training mannequins and AED trainers. Selecting the right course can be a confusing task. This article will explain the options Canadians have when selecting a CPR course whether it is partnered with first aid or in a stand-alone program.
CPR level “A” – Basic Life Support CPR
This CPR level is the most basic CPR course. It includes training in the use of AED’s and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete. Re-certification programs (firstaidrenewal.ca) are not available for this level. The main focus of this class is CPR rescue skills for adult victims. Successful candidates receive a Red Cross CPR level “A” and AED certificate that is valid for 3 years. This course is typically partnered with emergency first aid but can also be offered in a stand-alone program.
CPR level “B”
This CPR level can only be found partnered with childcare first aid. It is almost identical to CPR level “A” but it incorporates rescues skills for child victims. This CPR course cannot be provided through a stand-alone program.
CPR level “C”
This CPR level is the most comprehensive course for candidates. It incorporates all of the content from CPR level “A” and “B” but adds additional material for infant victims. This course can be offered in a stand-alone program or partnered with a first aid course. This training is typically partnered with standard first aid. Re-certification courses are available for CPR level “C”.
CPR level “C” for Health Care Providers / CPR “HCP”
This CPR level is the most complicated course that is designed for health care workers. This course incorporates all of the components of CPR level “C” and adds additional material for the use of advanced equipment and training assistance. This course can be partnered with standard first aid. Re-certification courses are available for CPR “HCP” (CPRHCP.CA).
