god i love the brief julian crash out in episode 28. from a character perspective it makes a ton of sense, but i honestly love it equally as a genre/tone reaction. It's so easy to default to 'look around babe. you live in a realm' as the reaction that all fantasy characters have to insane bullshit, like thousand year old demons or swarms of the undead, especially for more well-travelled or knowledgable ones, but it is so much more interesting to have a character, whilst still fully aware of magic and monsters and all that comes with that, draw a firm line in the sand and go 'no seriously what the FUCK was that?'. i love that he loses it for a second and just absolutely refuses to take wild shit in his stride without explanation.

Thjazi Fang you absolute madman

We’ve learned some important info about him post mortem - his soul is unreachable by Speak with Dead, and the Tachonis gave him the scar

Based on the titan skeleton nightmare Thaisha and the squad saw at the cemetery and the ghastly face of Nullus Tachonis, Thjazi is NOT a puppet of House Tachonis, despite their best efforts to make him so. “Bring him to me” means they don’t have him.

The Speak with Dead not working could mean that the Tachonis already tried to do so. In the wording of the spell, it states that the spell fails if the corpse was the target of the spell within the last 10 days. Thjazi was executed 11 days prior to this casting of the spell (unless my timeline is off but I think it was 11). It is entirely possible that someone, likely a Tachonis, used a Speak with Dead spell after his burial, which would fall within the spell’s 10 day limit. If that were the case it would also explain how the Tachonis gave him the scar without anyone at the funeral noticing anything amiss on his body.

The more interesting and in my opinion more likely outcome is that Thjazi’s soul is somewhere else. It’s not in Death across the veil, it’s hidden or it’s moving through another plane? Thjazi could have done some sort of a deal akin to the Drowned Men, something that would keep his soul firmly out of the realm of Death and out of Tachonis hands. We don’t know where Thjazi got his magic from so that leads me to believe there’s some warlock potential.
