Centralia, PA - February 2017
A once prominent mining community, a coal fire from 1962 still burns beneath the town of Centralia. It is now considered a near-ghost town, with a population of around 7 people remaining (according to a 2013 estimate).
Located just beyond St. Ignatius Cemetery, one of three in the town, is the widely known graffiti highway, formerly Route 61. Also known as the cracked highway, it’s a 3/4 mile long stretch of abandoned road that runs from Centralia to Ashland.
