On occasion, I'll post some lesson plans--recipes, if you will--of my own creation that worked particularly well. Most if not all of these are imperfect, but they are lessons that I hope to keep trying and adjusting until they are just right.
This first one is probably my favorite lesson thus far and, since I implemented it on a day I subbed for Mr. M., I had the chance to test it on FOUR different groups of juniors, so I had lots of data to work with.
Dickinson Poetry Layers
Components:
Homework assignment (poem)
Lecture Prezi (on Dickinson's life and style)
Group craft activity (poetry break-down)
Objectives:
The student will practice annotation, both individually and with a group
The student will have access to key background/stylistic information on Dickinson, which will later support interpretation of her poetry
The student will visually represent the difference between a surface-level reading and a close reading
The student will grapple with ways to represent verbal information (such as themes) visually
The Lesson:
Teacher stamps homework poem, "Because I could not stop for Death," for thorough annotations
Teacher delivers a background Prezi on Dickinson to expose students to key information about Dickinson's life and style (Prezi can be found here). Students take cloze notes on the Prezi.
During Prezi, teacher leads a brief debrief of the homework poem, where students offer their interpretations and peculiarities they noticed in the poem
Each group receives one Dickinson poem (I used the following: "Hope is the thing with Feathers," "I felt a Funeral," "I heard a Fly buzz," "I like to see it lap the Miles," "Tell all the Truth," and "I dwell in Possibility")
Each group annotates its given poem
Each group breaks down its poem to three components: (a) structure and mechanics, (b) apparent meaning of the poem, and (c) actual meaning of the poem
Each group creates a three-layer visual out of construction paper, where each layer represents one of the components mentioned in step 6
Students explain their annotated poem and their layered visual to the full group
Teacher Model:

Bottom layer: 6 lines, representing 6-syllable lines in the poem
Middle layer: bees and flowers, representing the apparent subject of the poem: nature
Top layer: a church, representing the hidden meaning of the poem: as the poem is structured in the same way as the Father-Son-Holy Ghost blessing, it implies that nature is a church and religion in itself, and thus just as sacred

What worked:
The visuals forced the students to separate the surface-level reading from the close reading, something they've been struggling with
The activity kept all members of the group engaged
Some students used the information from the Prezi to help them interpret the poems
The activity was challenging, but not impossible, for all four classes
What could be improved:
"Hope is the thing with Feathers" is too easy a poem, especially for this particular activity
We tried doing this in a single 50-minute period, and that was not enough time at all! It forced us to blaze through the homework debrief, and left no time at all for presentations of the visuals, as students worked all the way to the bell. Next time, I would dedicate a full block day to this lesson
Not all students seemed to realize that yes, they could use the information from the Prezi to inform their reading of the poem (particularly the bits about Dickinson's Circumference and Circuits)
A couple of the interpretations were way off base. To counter this, I might have to tell students explicitly when they were interpreting incorrectly--much as I hate to crush their creative thinking
