love how the movie made it explicitly clear that republic city was built on air nomad land after years of seeing aang get called a colonizer in the name of the 4th worst villain of a sequel series

never mind that the earth king literally agreed to it before that lady was even born.

although it should have already been clear from the comics that the land did not belong to any one nation before the genocide and was only visited by air nomads but you know how this fandom gets.

And tbh idk the lore behind why specifically cranefish town got turned into republic city…but doesn’t it make more sense for their city to be in the Fire Nation?

The lore is that Yu Dao had been a colony for so long, that it resisted going back to the Earth Kingdom, so it and the rest of the colonies were then turned into the United Republic of Nations by the Gaang because that’s what the people wanted and it was the best solution.

Idk exactly, but I think Cranefish Town became Republic City (the capital of the URON) because it was the most prosperous part of the country.

So no, it wouldn’t make sense for it to be in the Fire Nation, because it’s the capital of a country not a city-state.

(Side note: I wish we got to see more of the rest of the URON in LoK. It would’ve been so cool to see how it developed alongside Republic City)

I don’t know why, but I am in love with Cranefish Town. It’s chaotic, and dirty, and has its issues from the start, but it also has so much potential, both within the narrative and as a writer doing the worldbuilding to connect ATLA to LoK.

The town in The Rift didn’t capture my attention in the same way. In those comics, I was more focused on the characters themselves and the inequalities between the benders and the non-benders. But something changed by the time we see it again in Imbalance. I’ve only read those comics once, so I can’t say quite what the change was for me, but as I was reading them, I wanted to write all of the stories that took place there. Cranefish Town came alive for me in a way that no other location in Avatar had. The gaang is older and they’re shaping the world that they saved.

And when someone pointed out that the nearby island Aang & Katara went to (as Aang struggled with the choice he had to make) would later become Air Temple Island, aka the geographical embodiment of their love and their family????? I’m so soft and I don’t care who knows it!!!!!

I was surprised when I realized that my Sukka fic is the only one in the Cranefish Town tag. I don’t know if that means that no one else has used it, or not enough people have used it for it to register, but I want to read all of the stories in this town, and if I can’t easily find them, then I’m going to write them.
