Dipping my toes in the crankie waters … I’d really like to make more (I have an idea of a series of small motorized ones.) In the meantime, for practice I took the drawings of an abandoned pop-up book, “There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly,” and put them in a GreenRoads CBD box. SUPER EXCITED to participate in Sue Truman’s / @suetruman1015 matchbox crankie workshop this weekend! (Oh, and big thanks to @miclaw13 for suggesting I make a crankie in the first place. xo Also big thanks to @emikesell and @jed_the_doofius for their long ago chats and inspiration for this interpretation of the story. xo) #crankies #minicrankies #crankie #movingpanorama https://www.instagram.com/p/CaFNLuBO9rM/?utm_medium=tumblr
Very pleased that Laurel Daen and I to have “Mouth & Toes: The World of 19th Century Silhouette Artists With Disabilities” displayed (virtually) at the 2021 Examined Life Conference, The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine / Creative Writing Program, focusing on the links between medicine, health, and the arts. Special thanks to the American Antiquarian Society (@americanantiquarian) for their support through a Jay and Deborah Last Creative Artist Fellowship. https://examinedlifeconference.com #mouthandtoes #crankie #crankies #silhouette #silhouetteartists #bookarts #physiognotrace #moseswilliams #flipbook #flipbooks #flipbookit #graphicmedicine #silhouetteartists #marthaannhoneywell #movingpanorama #movingpanoramas #northwestartscenter #americanantiquarian #examinedlifeconference https://www.instagram.com/p/CViiUHglIkc/?utm_medium=tumblr
Hello friends. Tomorrow/Thursday August 19th, my wonderful collaborator, historian Laurel Daen, and I will be presenting Mouth & Toes virtually at the American Antiquarian Society / @americanantiquarian. In addition to talking about our project and the various artists’ books (ie accordion/crankie/flip books), we’ll be debuting the eBook AND virtual galleries of the work of Martha Ann Honeywell, Sarah Rogers, and Saunders Nellis! Free. Registration link (https://www.americanantiquarian.org/virtual-public-program-mouth-and-toes-world-19th-century-silhouette-artists-disabilities-0) and in bio. #mouthandtoes #crankie #crankies #silhouette #silhouetteartists #bookarts #graphicmedicine #silhouetteartists #marthaannhoneywell #movingpanorama #movingpanoramas #northwestartscenter #americanantiquarian https://www.instagram.com/p/CSuTd32HLIv/?utm_medium=tumblr
Martha Ann Honeywell had an extraordinary sixty year (1798-1856) career, touring the country and the world primarily by herself. She was a master artist in paper cutting, needlework, painting, drawing, wax work, and miniature drawing. Also, an amazing new detail of her life has been revealed in “Mouth & Toes: The World of 19th Century Silhouette Artists with Disabilities”. My collaborator, Laurel Daen, has discovered that in addition to performing for royalty while in Europe, Honeywell married a show man named Mr. Bagshaw. She toured with him and his menagerie until the time of his death. I love that our book shares this new information to the world! (Page detail from book, in cranky, accordion, and soon-to-be eBook form.) Currently on view at the Northwest Arts Center (@northwestartscenter.) Special thanks to the American Antiquarian Society (@americanantiquarian) for their support through a Jay and Deborah Last Creative Artist Fellowship. #mouthandtoes #crankie #crankies #silhouette #silhouetteartists #bookarts #physiognotrace #moseswilliams #flipbook #flipbooks #flipbookit #graphicmedicine #silhouetteartists #marthaannhoneywell #movingpanorama #movingpanoramas #northwestartscenter #americanantiquarian https://www.instagram.com/p/CONf5bQlcOA/?igshid=i84pctjvz98x
It’s impossible to talk about 19th century silhouettes without talking about the Peale Museum and Moses Williams. Williams, who was formerly enslaved by Peale, cut thousands of silhouettes using the physiognotrace. He was an extraordinary artist and makes a brief appearance in “Mouth & Toes: The World of 19th Century Silhouette Artists with Disabilities”, (a collaboration with Laurel Daen) but Williams absolutely deserves his own book. Thank you, @efsacco for your groundbreaking research into his work and legacy. Currently on view at the Northwest Arts Center (@northwestartscenter.) Before the opening event last Thursday evening, the wonderful Greg Vettel and Sallie Mitchell of the Northwest Arts Center (@northwestartscenter) at Minot State University did a walk-through of the show for me via Zoom. So exciting!! I’m particularly thrilled because it was the debut of Mouth & Toes: The World of 19th Century Silhouette Artists with Disabilities, a collaboration with Laurel Daen. Seen here are two crankies/moving panoramas, 4 flip books, animations of artists in action, and four free-standing accordion books. Thank you, Greg and Sallie!
