The Rum Diary was written by Hunter S Thompson in the early 1960s and then adapted into a screenplay by Oscar winning British filmmaker Bruce Robinson in the late 90s.

When asked about the story, Thompson stated that he “wanted to write the Great American Novel - but I could never beat that goddamn Gatsby”
