It was 1939 and Lois Hendricks of Tulsa, Oklahoma had just purchased a one-way ticket to Hollywood, California in hopes of making it in show business. She checked her large metal-sided suitcase which was packed tightly with her show costumes and collection of thirteen harmonicas. She kept her favorite harmonica in her purse just in case of an emergency. Lois made her way to the bus, the smell of the bus diesel fumes evoking thoughts of travel wonder and excitement. She made her way to an open seat next to a smartly dressed young man wearing a blue gabardine suit.
"My name is Tony… Tony Campelli…I'm a sales representative for the Acme Toaster Company."
The bus pulled away from the station and made its way toward the highway.
"Toaster Salesman ah?" Lois replied, trying to keep from giggling. "My name is Lois Hendricks, I'm a professional harmonica player."
"Wow, you're in show business. That's swell. But you know toast is very important. Did you realize that 89% of Americans start their day with a piece of toast? I like to think that I'm a part of starting up the nation each morning." Tony said proudly.
"I never thought about it that way. I suppose toast IS very important." Lois quipped, her facial expression exhibiting a confirming admiration.
Just then a women in the back of the bus let out an anguished scream, "STOP THE BUS! Call a doctor…my uncle Bill is sick."
The bus driver slammed on the brakes and pulled off the highway. Tony jumped up and walked back down the isle to see what was going on. He found a large woman waving her hat over an even larger elderly man who was slumped over in his seat.
Another passenger brushed by Tony. "I'm a doctor mam." he said as he reached to feel for Uncle Bill's pulse. "I'm afraid he's going fast mam, looks like his heart is failing."
"I told him he wasn't well enough to travel but he insisted he wanted to see the ocean one more time." The woman said as she began to sob. "He also loved harmonica music, if only he could hear his favorite song before he passes."
The doctor turned toward the passengers in the bus and yelled, "IS THERE A HARMONICA PLAYER ON THE BUS?"
That was perhaps Lois' greatest performance as she never did make it in show business. But she did marry a swell toaster salesman and traveled the world with him, taking along her trusty favorite suitcase (and a harmonica for just in case).
