Social Media can be really awful for a number of reasons, but also really wonderful. I love it when the wonderful comes through. A beautiful soul named Barbie @barbiegc follows me on Twitter. We share similar faith and views, and we enjoy each others' commentary and interaction. Barbie is also battling cancer, so Lynn and I are holding her up in our prayers. A few months ago, she DMed me and said she had a bed set that she felt that I could use. We exchanged numbers and information, and she arranged to get the bedding to me. I wanted to at least pay for the shipping, but she said her daughter had already made arrangements with UPS, so it was no charge! On Friday, we received the boxes, and I was able to unpack them today. It is sooo fancy--something I would never buy for myself--but it fits perfectly with our bed, and I love it! What a blessing to not only connect with people I would otherwise not have an opportunity to get to know, but to be blessed and honored with such a generous gift. Barbie and I both feel it is a divine connection that we interacted. When I was a kid bopping around the Magnificent Mile, I used to be in awe of the tall buildings and architecture. When I would pass by The Drake Hotel, where everyone from heads of state like Winston Churchill to celebrities like Marilyn Monroe rested their heads, I made a promise to myself that I would stay there one day. Interesting how time, distance, and the vagaries of life cause you to forget. Amazing how God doesn't forget these things, and fulfills the desires of our heart in the most unique ways. My business in the Loop extended throughout this week, so Lynn and I needed another hotel for a few days that wasn't exorbitant. So I used the site Hotwire for the first time to book a hotel. You choose a location, but you don't know which hotel it is until you have accepted the deal. I chose the cheapest rate and then saw what I got: low and behold, I had a few nights at The Drake Hotel! It's been fun lolling in refined opulence at a place where the walls are soaked in history and memory. Lynn and I don't get a lot of opportunities for luxury things, and rarely have money or space to plan for them; so it's nice to have God drop one in our laps, just because.
