When Jill stepped right in front of him out of nowhere, raising her hands with the palms outstretched, all Chris could do was stand there in a daze. He blinked in confusion but allowed it as she ran her fingers through his hair over and over again. He used to put product in it back when he left the USAF and joined S.T.A.R.S but now it did its own thing without him needing to do much but wash it every morning and just shake it out. “Uh, Jill...?” he began, staring at her face to try and determine what could possibly be going through her mind in that moment. “Enjoying yourself?”

❝    He  wouldn’t  shut  the  hell  up.  ❞  She  hisses  through  gritted  teeth,  bruised  and  bloodied  knuckles  glistening  beneath  fluorescent  lights;  a  single  handkerchief  saturated  crimson.  She’s  gone  too  far  this  time,  despite  the  bombardment  being  well-deserved.  All  control  was  lost,  and  impulsiveness  quashed  any  and   all  rationality.   Now  her  livelihood  is  at  risk,  and  everything   she’s   worked  for  could  be  gone  in  an  instant.  She’s  at  the  mercy  of  her superiors,  all  because of  one  wrong  move, or  in  this  case, a moment  of  blackout  rage.   ‘I  can’t  keep  doing  this...’  There’s  contrite  behind  ordinarily  fiery  eyes.  A  rare  look  of  humiliation.  ‘I’m  sorry.’    ❝  ...but  I  should  have  held  back.  ❞  She  exhales,  features  softening  when  eyes  land  on  Ingrid,  the  only  colleague  whose  had  her  back  through  all  of  this  mess.    ❝  I’ll  do  better  next  time...  if  there  is  a  next  time.  ❞  pride  swallowed,  she  fights  back  the  urge  to  complain  or  bicker.  If  it  weren’t  for  her,  the  killer  would  have  slipped  through  their  fingers,  and  onto  the  next  victim.

His head cocked to the side slightly and his eyes levelled with hers. Judging from her expression, she genuinely wanted a hug and wasn't just teasing. Who was he to refuse? He moved in and wrapped Jill up in an embrace that lifted her a few inches off the ground with exuberance. "Missed me?" he muttered into the crook of her neck.

Jill had her back turned to him and he decided to take his chances as he approached. She would either be pleasantly surprised and lean into his embrace or she would elbow him in the ribs out of reflex and he’d have a bruise to show for his efforts. His arms wrapped around her middle when he was close enough, his chin resting on her shoulder as his nose nudged her cheek. “Hey,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her temple as she turned her head toward him. “It’s good to see you, partner.”

𝙨𝙤𝙛𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙚

Her lips were soft, gentle against his stubbled cheek. It took him off guard. He said nothing, just blinked at Jill for several seconds until he almost instinctively turned his body into hers and touched the small of her back briefly. Alcohol truly is liquid courage, he thought to himself with a shrug. He figured she’d only do such a thing with alcohol in her system. Jill Valentine wasn’t like other women—she didn’t chase him or fall all over him like a high school girl. In fact, someone else had made a pass at Chris a minute or two before she kissed his cheek. A possible correlation? Nah. He just took a swig of beer and returned to conversation with one of his buddies. The man didn’t give it much more thought but his eyes would flicker to Jill every so often.

𝑺𝑯𝑬 𝑷𝑨𝑼𝑺𝑬𝑺 𝑩𝑹𝑰𝑬𝑭𝑳𝒀, 𝑪𝑼𝑹𝑰𝑶𝑼𝑺 𝑮𝑨𝒁𝑬 𝑻𝑨𝑲𝑰𝑵𝑮 𝑵𝑶𝑻𝑬  of  ingrid’s  body  language.  It’s  awkward,  stiffer  than  normal,  and  is  that  a  slight  tremble  she’s  picking  up?  no,  can’t  be.  ‘what  the  hell  has  gotten  into  her?’

❝ ...  i’m  gonna  assume  i  should  wear  another  dress  then.  ❞  hands  rest  firmly  on  hips,  head  tilted  to  the  side,  considering  her  next  move.  she  just  can’t  let  it  go,  the  discomfort  of  biting  her  tongue  is  far  worse  than  her  natural  sense  of  inquisitiveness,  even  if  the  truth  is  painful.  it’s  better  than   agonizing  over  the unknown.  ‘if  she  knew  how  much  money  i  spent  on  this  damn  thing...’
