"All the world's a stage," especially for the young ones. This stage is a safe space for our learners to empathise, emote, express, engage, imitate and re-create. Theatre helps discover the aesthetic and intellectual understanding of the theatre arts as well as respect for others. Theatre is not just playing a character, but discovering one. It is the ability to be in control of one’s expressions. Mentors introduce young and imaginative enthusiasts to the basic appreciation of the theatre arts. But more importantly, they are introduced to the essential skills of interpersonal emotional intelligence and the value of respecting others in terms of personalities and space. Mentors help to impart skills for the discovery of self-image through activities and exercises that the learners find both fun and fulfilling. They learn the vital life-skills of collaboration and respecting others and their arts, as they showcase the culminating act at the end of the term. The digital age is impacting the lives of young learners in our community who need to be creators and not just consumers of technology. Technology needs to be a tool to support academic and civic engagement, along with lifelong learning opportunities. The creation module will focus on problem-solving mechanisms through the structured approach of design-thinking.
Creators will experience the process of design thinking and creative problem-solving: framing a problem, collaborative brainstorming for solutions, creating prototypes, testing prototypes and finally using the product/solution and representing the products/solutions in real-time. The module will focus on an emergent curriculum that will stitch together needs/problems identified by the learners in the other modules (Creative Expression, Theatre, Wellness, Planet Savers). Learners will have access to various tools to give life to their solutions/products in an open-access makerspace. From creating a paper circuit to coding to digital fabrication, it is for the learners to choose and our mentors to guide them, champion the tools. They will be thinking critically to solve real-time problems with perseverance and dedication while they are at play. The process of creating with fellow learners allows them to work collaboratively. The hands-on learning environment is an essential element for confident, empathic creator-learners.
The Afro-Brazilian martial art form of Capoeira stands for liberty and expression of the free spirit residing within each of us. It is a form of movement that combines spins, turns, precise kicks, evasive moves and breath-taking acrobatics woven into a rich fabric of motion, percussion and song. The module for young Capoeiristas aged 7-10 years focuses on enhancing their awareness and respect for the space around them as well as others sharing that space, on movement, tempo, beat and rhythm section. During the MOVEMENT segment, children jump, run, crawl, throw and catch, while imbibing more acrobatics as they enjoy practicing the movements of animals such as the lion, the crab, the frog, the spider, etc. Their flexibility improves with cartwheels, bridges and stretches derived from yogasanas. During the MARTIAL ARTS segment, they coordinate in pairs, while learning the foundational straight and side kicks, which helps improve muscle strength. They also learn basic evasive manoeuvres such as ducking and lunging. During the MUSIC segment, they subconsciously learn the basics of beat and rhythm by way of clapping to Portuguese songs. During the DANCE segment, they are introduced to the Brazilian dance form of Samba.
