Creative Character Design Final Project:
Prompt: Create a story based off a song.
Requirements: At least two characters, a 10+ panel music video storyboard, and character size comparison sheet
Project Title: “Dream Wander”
Song: “言って(Say It)” by Yorushika.
Characters: Sky (elf boy), REM, Yuri (Sleep Monster)
The story revolves around an elf boy (based off Sky, who belongs to @ukitakejuushiro — thank you Danie for helping and inspiring me on all my projects this semester!) who is lured into the Cursed Forest by the evil spirit REM. REM is a demon fox (not Naruto lmao) who kidnaps village children and leads them into the forest, where other Sleep Monsters wander.
You turn into a Sleep Monster upon contact with another one, but this doesn’t happen for Sky. He follows the trail of REM’s tail feathers and encounters Yuri, a Sleep Monster. Terrified, he begins running and accidentally falls of a hidden cliff, but Yuri saves him. Yuri is friendly — she just wants to play and be friends. The two become buddies, but REM finds them and punishes Yuri for not transforming Sky into another Sleep Monster. Yuri defends Sky, but is overpowered by REM and engulfed by his tail feathers, disappearing completely.
Sky chases after, searching for his friend, but unable to find her as she’s been locked away deep in the Cursed Forest. He spends his life searching for her, growing up, freeing other Sleep Monsters in the process. Eventually, he faces off against REM again and defeats him with a blazing arrow. Released from her curse, Yuri’s true for is revealed. She is a fairy girl from another tribe, and she carries the sash that Sky had given her long ago.
The two of them are happily reunited at the end of the story!
Design research:
Throughout this project (and all the previous ones), we always did extensive research via image search, sketches, class comparisons, and collaborative feedback. I started out with very complex and jumbled ideas, but simplified them to achieve this final project.
Sky’s clothing is based off of patterns and garments from traditional Filipino tribes (which Danie helped me with and inspired me to do!). I tried incorporating the shape of their sashes, shawls, and vests, as well as the patterns (which are drastically simplified for sake of story and...well, my skill level haha). I also wanted to include the face paint from another tribe, and ended up giving it to Yuri (in the form of very simple diamonds).
Finally, REM is a mixture of many animals I find sleek and beautiful, and Yuri’s Sleep Monster form is based off of a) my cat, Mochi, a round ball of chaos, and b) RED PANDAS because they are so fluffy and adorable.
It’s been a wonderful semester in this class, and I’m so happy to finish it off with a project like this!!
