Yesterday a scientist told me about a couple of papers he published recently; one in Science (a very prestigious journal) and one in a much less well-known outlet. He was proud of both, but he really thought the Science work was groundbreaking. Yet he didn't get a single media call about it, whereas the other paper triggered a wave of media interest and he could hardly get any work done for a week with all the calls.
It struck me that this happens in every field of human endeavor. We can never predict how important or interesting our creations will be to other people, and so many factors beyond our ken and beyond our control factor into a work's popularity. In fandom I may I pour my heart into a piece of writing that never gets more than a handful of kudos, while a hastily-doodled comic becomes the most popular thing I've ever posted. And I'm truly proud of both! And sure, at times I let myself feel wistful about some creations not getting more attention. But I keep remembering--how lucky am I to get to create at all? How fortunate to exist, to have ideas, to write and draw the things I love?
