Bonfire night 5/11/16

Our toes are frozen and painful to walk on because the cold has sunken beneath our skin and settled in our bones.  

I am here in a field in East London with some friends waiting for a (late) fireworks display to commence. Families are the most prominent of people here, children are holding tightly to their parent’s hands, while others sit on their shoulders.  Finally, the horrendous music, picked out by requests by people on Twitter (insists the DJ), has come to an end. The night is calm with the expectant chatter of people and the display begins.

The theme of the night is iconic movie themes (which ends with an in irony).

The first is theme Superman and amongst other themes are The Killers-Mr Brightside, Aerosmith-I don’t want to miss a thing, ET and Stark wars to name a few; the music causes some to sing along as our memories recall older times. As the music plays the fireworks ascend into the sky in a magnificent sight to show an admittedly ingenious combination of movie themes (albeit the explosions a second behind the beat) and fireworks to produce an entertaining display.

The black night bursts alive and booms with sequences of red, blue, white, cream, green, pink and purple, we watch awed at the co-ordination of the fireworks; there are the huge ones that instantaneously bloom, the screechers that leave the ground loud and quietly die in the sky and the crackling sparkles that appears to be menacing fairy dust. The night is not only filled with colour but also a thick, grey smoke that temporarily blankets the area and is only highlighted by the fireworks when they go off.   There is also fire flaring up in the distance (part of the display too) as it awakens from pillars while the songs play. Though the fireworks display is ooh inducing the distance between us and them is not far, the remains from the pyrotechnics comes in the form of orange embers which reign from the sky and land on the grass to be quickly stamped out by cautious civilians.  

The fireworks display ends and we go home, with surges of other people, I think of my day, it has gone from disappointment to delight.  I smile I want more days like this; smoky nights filled with hope.

The irony is, the last ‘iconic’ theme is ‘Let it go’ from Frozen.
