I have been fortunate to have a supportive family when it comes to my creativity and ways of doing art. I’ve never been an artist when it comes to drawing and stuff like that, but have always enjoyed the music side of art. I began writing music when I was about 10 years old. The way I have written has changed through the years. Each song written represented the time and space I was in at the point of my life. God, life events, family, and friends have always been encouragement and inspiration for me. However, my personal insecurities and doubts have prevented me from continuing over the last few years to write. This is the first song I have written in a long time. While the music I write is specifically for me, I still find myself concerned about whether other people would enjoy my music or find it interesting. My hope would be for people to be touched and encouraged by the message in the songs. This song especially is a representation of the ups and downs in my life right now. While it is mostly feeling like downs, there is still hope in God being by my side. People are not alone even when it feels that way. Hopefully this song shows others that message.

“Poser”, 10x10 inches, Graphic Design, 10/1/20

Poser was the word that I chose when creating this project because I often feel like my work is defined by its ability to impress others. Especially when sharing my art this need for approval has become so ingrained in my psyche that I often feel like a poser creating art simply for gratification. Wether it’s because my work uses concepts i’ve seen others use or just a lack of confidence I often get extremely nervous when sharing my art and feel judged for a lack of originality. This need to impress others is something that I feel has plagued my artistic history and is something I often struggle with.

HOMEWORK #3 -- Balanced

This is my art piece, Balanced. If you look at the different pictures you can see without one of the pieces it’s imbalanced and not level. Looking at this, I feel that it has not only represented me and my life but also my creative life as well. On the left side, you will see pictures of me and my family growing up. These pictures are showing how even at a young age there was a camera in my life. My mom always captured moments that took place, which led to my love of photography, shown on the right side of the picture. These pictures show me with a camera and the different pictures I have taken. It’s something that I have enjoyed learning about and growing. This leads to the lowest picture. If you look closely at the bottom picture you will see a picture of my cousins. This picture is showing how my family impacts my creativity, and this is why I hang it the lowest. At the time it was one way I was searching for affirmation from my family but I got “how come this isn’t a video”. As much as that hurt and affected me, the other side of my family built me up, and helped me grow! And lastly, at the very top is a picture of me, because all of this has added to and made who I am today.

For this assignment I wanted to focus mainly on the question: “How have family and friends best supported me through my work as a creative? And how have family and friends hurt my work as a creative?” This assignment is really hard for me because the answers I have to these questions are difficult for me to share. My friends and family have greatly supported through everything. For the moment I could hold my pencil people saw that I would one day be an artist. And through having that constant reminder that people believe in me so much, kinda has hurt me as an artist. Here in my piece you see two pictures, the one on the left no one has ever seen before because I am not proud of it. (Just want to tell you that it’s extremely out of my comfort zone that I’m sharing this with you now). Because of how I have grown up through creating art people hold me at this high standard, where it can become extremely stressful for me to create art. Because of this, I only let the outside world see the things that I am most proud of because I know that it will live up to other peoples expectations. Which is not good! As I do this, my progression isn’t really being shown because all I put forward are my successes with no struggles. The two pictures you see above are only months apart. But no one would ever know that because I feel scared to share my growth process. I titled this piece “The Imperfect Progress,” because artist are always in a growing stage. As hard is it sounds, “If you can’t grow then how can you get better?!” We can’t always have every piece be a “win” but if we share our struggles and successes then we can help other artist find that safe place to express themselves and truly share EVERYTHING we have to offer. Even if it is scary, our growth can help other people flourish in their own way. We just have to be willing to share!
