Description of Piece:

This semester I got to research Maria Nepomuceno! She is an amazing Brazilian artists that has taught me a lot about having my audience for my work truly feel something and be immersed in an experience. I have also realized I am an artists that feels great joy when I can create art for people without it being commissioned/asked for. The work I created is supposed to embody thoughtfulness that will never cease. The idea of creating a bouquet of flowers out of crotchet is to make the viewer feel known and loved. It is so great to know when someone is thinking of you because that shows how much they truly care for you.

1.What’s abstraction good for? Describe some of the reasons why artists might employ abstraction in their work. 

Abstraction is good for so many things! I did not used to think so, I used to think that abstract art wasn’t art… but my mindset has changed! I love using abstract-ness in my artwork! Personally I use abstraction in my artwork when I want to convey deeper emotions. One of my art pieces from a past art show titled, Unsettled, was an abstract digital piece with a bunch of markings and shading, all to give off the feeling of unsettled chaos. These markings and specific darknesses were able to convey that meaning because of its. abstractness. If I were to have specifically drawn something like a crashing ocean and titled it Unsettled there would be no greater value to it because I’m explicitly telling you what you were seeing. Abstraction gives a space to where people can see what they want to see which can overall be a huge part in the meaning of the piece because it’s more likely to be applicable to every audience.

2.What does having a physical space to make art in mean for your process and how do you make your space work for you?

Having a specific space to create art, is something I think is really important. Creating yourself an environment that is designated for a specific purpose can often aid in coming up with great ideas. For me personally this is in my room at my carpenter desk, listening to worship music with my door closed. And I’ve noticed that when I create art in this space I tend to create art that I am most proud. It’s like everything makes sense and I can solve any problem. It depends on the type of piece I’m working on but often I will also work literally on my bedroom floor on my hands and knees. It doesn’t matter really where I am in my room as long as I am alone and actively worshiping and talking to God throughout my creative process I can create anything. I make the space work for me because it’s all I got. Working in the art studio here at school has been the worst for me as far as creating art “I like” because it is so different from my natural habitats in a sense. Going from a place that is super comfy and inviting to going to a bland room with cement floors is a big switch that is hard for me to adjust to. This is why I personally think practicum should be done any space we feel comfortable, and not forced to be in the art studio. Everyone has their own environment that they best create art in and mine is in my bedroom🥰.

1.How does the location or context of a work of art affect its meaning?

The location or context completely affects the meaning of an artwork. Location is a major factor for an artwork. For instance, if a sculpture of a butterfly was placed in a dark basement versus suspended somehow outside in the sunshine, there would be a very different way to look at it. The basement might give off an eerie feeling, rather in the sunshine, it might give off a freedom, and a more joyful outlook. Overall it’s very important on how we display our artwork because we can use the surrounding environment to speak into the work to help others engage with how we want them to see our artwork. I also think that having the ability to either share with people or have an artist statement next to a piece is very important because it can allow the viewer to fully understand the reasoning/ process behind a piece, and then to fully appreciate the artwork itself.

2.Are there any particular activities you do everyday as an artist?

I would say aside from creating art I am really big on gathering information and inspiration that I can use for future artworks. For this I go on Pinterest and Instagram a lot. I follow a lot of artist accounts that are either artwork somewhat similar to what I make or artwork that I strive to to make. But I would say that the majority of my planning process is through social media and the physical outside world. Overall, I would say that everyday, I try to take in what is around me to potentially plan for future artworks.

1.What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?

For me I often struggle with motivation especially when the artwork is for school. To help me with this I often pray for motivation. Looking back, for instance on this past art show, my pieces would not have been finished without God’s help. Another thing I do to help keep myself motivated is just to figure out art that I really want to make. If it’s something I’m interested in, often I will be motivated.

2. Can art provoke change or transform our way of thinking? How?

Yes! Absolutely! For the longest time I never considered “abstract” art—art. But I also thought that before I tried to make an abstract artwork. When I did try it, I really enjoyed it. Now one out of every three artworks of mine will probably be abstract. Which is crazy! Because before I thought that people that created abstract art weren’t real artists. I have come such a long way!

1. How have the tools and materials of artists changed over time?

Today we have so much more access to technology and materials than artists did decades ago. It’s crazy to think about more possibilities with art that we will have access to in the next ten years. Pretty much today, if you have an idea, there are an abundance amount of ways to accomplish it. Which is awesome, but I feel like in a sense that hinders our creative ability. Way back then in history, I feel like artists were more successful because they had to really think through their ideas to make a creation become possible. To me, people then, seemed to think more critically which in turn made their artwork even more incredible. Today, because we have everything at our fingertips I feel like it hinders our ability to think critically because we are so immersed with the possibilities on how to create an artwork.

2. What impact do you think commercialism and the media have had on your work? Is this good or bad?

I think that commercialism and the media have definitely impacted my work. Through following various art accounts on instagram I have been able to see what others in my social circle have gravitated towards, which helps me gauge what would be successful with posting my work to the public. I haven’t done a great job at promoting my work myself on instagram, so I definitely need to work on that. Overall, I think that commercialism and the media have been a positive influence on me as an artist, it has definitely helped in regards to inspiration for future ways I will promote my artwork.

1. What role does art play in our society? What role does art play in the church?

Art plays a huge role in society! Well, first off it is kinda impossible to not have art in society—because art can be literally anything. If we are talking in terms of interesting and unique art in our societies, then I think that it is highly important. Art in societies acts like our personal expression into our culture. We set ourselves apart by how we interact with the art around us and how we add to it. For art in the church, I think it is also very important. Most people might not even think that they contribute to the art in their own church—but they do. For instance, worshipping to God is an art. As other people worship in community with one another a greater art is being formed. By creating an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit can dwell and touch people opens up other people to receive more and more goodness from God. This makes worshipping an important form of art because it connects us with our creator.

2. How do you want people to remember your work?

I have probably said this in a different form before, but I want people to feel loved and experience joy when they experience my work. I create so that when people are having a rough time, they are able to see/remember my art as a sign that helped take them out of a difficult time. I want to shine light into the darkness that touches people and overall, helps them turn to Jesus.

1. What are the most important skills an artist can have?

The most important skills an artist can have is #1 an open mind and #2 having tried a little bit of everything when it comes to different mediums. It is so important to have an open mind in art. For a while, before I came to Jessup, I was pretty set on how I viewed artwork. I pretty much didn’t think that any art that was considered as “abstract” was art. Now that I have truly opened my mind to considering new things, I personally have created more art that is abstract. Also, being experienced in different mediums is something very good to have when you are trying to hone your own unique skills as an artist. This is just what I think personally.

2. What risks have you taken in your work and what has been at stake?

To answer both parts of this question I would say—Time! For instance this art show for this semester has been pretty overwhelming because of the time clock. We are supposed to make 2 art pieces and we only have a couple more weeks to have everything finalized. So, time in this case has been putting me in risky situations because I have to be super speedy about how I create my work. Also, with time being the huge factor, my true potential is at stake. Sure it can be nice to have a little bit of pressure to push you, to create your best; but when there is too much it almost seems like a hindrance. Like, I am not creating my best work because of the time crunch.

Once in a Lullaby

Title: “Once in a Lullaby”

Dimensions: 44 in. x 36 in.

Prompt:

1. Crochet technique we learned in this class: I connected the various colors of the rainbow through using the “seaming crochet” as well as using dry felting (the sun/ clouds).

2. Something you already know how to do: To connect all the pieces together I had to sew them with a needle (which I already knew how to do). I also have had some experience with making wall hangings.

3. Something new you learned: In order to make the rainbow I had to learn how to make a crocheted arch. The technique was actually a lot simpler than I thought! Which made it a lot of fun!

4. A Specific Inspiration: My specific inspiration for this piece is my love for children! I can’t wait to be a mom! I wanted to make a cute sculpture that I could hang next to my baby girls crib. This is so that she would be able to see something that would make her smile when she wakes up🥰.

5. A Completely different yet equally specific inspiration that isn’t related to the other inspiration: My second inspiration is my younger self. My mom would tell me that when I was little, I would only bring her home drawings of rainbows. I guess I had a deep love for them that I never really explored grown up. Through making this piece I was able to re-light that love I had, when I was little!

1.What shifts have occurred in your work?

As I reflect on the past work I have created, I can see a progression in my mediums and styles. I also noticed that I have occasionally gone the more abstract route instead of my typical hyper-realism. I used to be super set in my ways of doing things, but now I think it’s fun to try new things and explore. I also found that working with fibers is something I like! I can’t wait to see what I try next!!

2.How do the social identities of the artist relate to the work of art they create?

I think that social identities play a big role in the art that we create. I believe that what we surround ourselves with will determine how we act and go about life. I noticed that when I surround myself with things that are pleasing to God I feel much happier and often my work reflects that. Whatever we put into our selves will be reflected back through the things we create and the things we do.

1.Has there been a person or experience that has steered your work in new or significant directions?

YES! And she knows who she is….🤩Tina! From our very first class together in Creative Christian, I walked away from that class with new ideas that would lead my artwork in a complex, new/better direction. You taught me that literally anything is art (not just what’s on a canvas). Art is so multifaceted and there doesn’t have to be any rules attached if you don’t want them. You also showed me how playing and exploring in art is all about the creative process. Before I knew these things, for me, there was no playing, things were either the “final product” or considered a “mess up.” Anyway I could go on and on, but what really sticks out to me currently, is how I have found a love for fiber! I can see myself using fiber work as major part of my style! It’s something I really enjoy! Thanks Tina!

2.What distinguishes visual art from craft?

Visual art can be anything. I fell like it has a looser term than when we deal with the word craft. Craft is when we take a skill and master it into our own unique perspective. I think Visual art can be craft, it just sounds “harsh”? Craft makes it sound like you may never go outside of the box. It seems like a very traditional term that people use when they pass down the same techniques from generation to generation. Visual art is more of a free term that can be attached to anything.

1.How would you describe your subject matter or the content of your work?

I would describe my subject matter in my work as light hearted and joyful. When I create art I want my art to brighten other peoples day and draw them closer to Jesus. To me it doesn’t matter what the artwork in particular is, I just want my artwork, to spread Jesus’ light. All the glory goes to God in whatever I make!

2.How do the materials used to make art influence the meaning of the work?

The materials I use typically are bright happy colors. I love creating artwork that I can make sparkle ✨. After I took a visual communications class, I was able to learn about how different colors affect people through conveying a certain emotion. After reflecting on my own art, and the colors I choose; I found that I automatically gravitate towards brighter happy colors🤩. These colors often make people feel happy and joyful! Which is exactly what I want!
