Chapter 2 - B is for Bird +Â Creativisleepality
âCome on, babe. Turn that frown upside down,â comments Remy before elbowing Roman in the side causing him to smack Remy on the upper arm.Â
âThese foul birds have totally ruined my perfectly coiffed hair. I have every right to be upset,â he crosses his arms, âwhy did we come here again?â
Remy chuckled then pointed to a person standing several feet away and surrounded by birds of all colors while he fed a parakeet.
At the sight, Roman doesnât fight the smile that knocks his frown off of his face.Â
This effect is one of his favorite things about their boyfriend, Patton...he always makes them smile no matter their moods.Â
Roman pulls out his phone and snaps a couple photos.Â
âYeah, yeah...you have a point. Only Patton would be able to get me to come here; thereâs no need to be so smug about it,â comments Roman.
At that moment, Patton turns and smiles at his loves, who do their best to not swoon.Â
He walks over to them though not without a feathered entourage causing him to laugh and gently shoo them away before returning his attention to Roman and Remy.Â
âThis has been a wonderful date!â
Patton throws his arms around his boyfriends and hugs them tightly.Â
âWeâre happy youâre so happy, babe,â says Remy once Patton lets them go.Â
Roman takes Pattonâs hand who is quick to grab Remyâs in response.
âI think I remember someone said something about wanting to see the penguins and theyâre the next exhibit so we should move on so weâre not late to dinner with the rest of the gang,â comments Roman.Â
âSounds like a plan, Ro.â replies Patton.
âThen lead on, Charming,â chimes in Remy.
Roman rolls his eyes but smiles when Remy kisses his cheek.Â

Itâs fine.
Really, itâs fine.
Thereâs nothing wrong with the other Sides doing things without himâŚwithout him and with Deceit.
Deceitâs been working hard on finding his place among them and Patton supports that.
Patton pulls his knees up to his chest then rests his chin on top of them while wrapping his arms around them.
Itâs fine.
Heâs totally fine with it.
Thereâs nothing wrong at all.
His eyes flicker over to where Deceit, Logan, Virgil and Roman are gathered around the dining room table, discussing something or other that probably has to do with helping Thomas.
Patton sighs.
âWhatâs with the frown, cutie?â
His head snaps up at the unexpected question.
Leaning against the wall, stands Remy holding a cup while wearing his usual attire.
Patton smiles weakly at the honorary Side.
âOh1 Iâm fine, nothinâ to worry about!â
Remy lowers his sunglasses (if its not for the aesthetic then itâs not worth doing) and arches an eyebrow as he stares at Patton.
âOh honey, no. Didnât you lot already deal with hiding your emotions?â he asks.
Patton shrugs.
Itâs a hard habit to break but Romanâs helping with thatâŚhelped with that.
Looking back over at the other Sides, his gaze lands on Roman, laughing at something Deceit said and his mind flashes back to when they debated selfishness versus selflessness and how Roman reacted to Deceit. If Deceitâs who makes Roman happyâŚ..then thatâs all that matters.
He meets Remyâs gaze.
âTheyâre happy; thatâs all I ever wanted for them. Iâm not going to interrupt that,â comments Patton softly.
Remy looks over to the other Sides while Patton talks and notices Deceit flinch subtly enough the others donât notice then back at Patton.
âNope. Nope. Nope. Not happening, babe; not on my watch,â comments Remy.
Tilting his head to the side, Patton looks at Remy, unsure of what is happening or why.
Remy snaps his fingers.
On the table next to the couch, appears a mug of hot chocolate covered with so many marshmallows and in Pattonâs favorite mug that no one knows about.
âI-I-how did youâŚ?â
âKeeping track of what cute guys like is kinda my thing,â answers Remy before winking at Patton.
Patton covers his face with his hands to hide his blush.
Moving over to the couch as Patton picks up the mug, Remy sits down beside him, barely leaving any room between them; not that Pattonâs complaining.
âMmmâŚthis is delicious!â compliments Patton.
âNothing but the sweetest for the sweetest guy around.â
Yuppers, his head is gonna explode any moment now.
Heâs unable to resist leaning against Remy, who places an arm around his shoulder softly and pulls him closer.
Itâs nice, more than nice to be like this with someone.
There hasnât been much of a chance to do it lately.
Patton looks up at Remy and smiles softly, feeling more like himself and the smileâs returned just as genuinely; not the typical flirtatious smirk Remy gives people. Itâs a true smile and it makes him lookâŚbeautiful.
A soft sigh of contentment escapes his lips.
Remy waves his hand and their empty cups disappear in an instant before shifting them so they can lay down on the couch and cuddle with Pattonâs head laying on Remyâs chest and an arm across his waist while he holds him close.
In this position, itâs almost easy to forget the others are near with their voices a light hum in the background.
THUD!
âWhen did Remy get here?â
Roman stares at the other man in surprise but then notices whoâs with him. Thereâs a strange feeling bubbling up inside of his chest upon seeing Patton cuddling with Remy in the position heâs usually cuddling Roman in.
When was the last time they cuddled though?
Itâs a punch to his gut.
He thinks back on the last few weeks and how he kept brushing Patton off when he wanted to cuddle and promising they would later.
Later never arrived.
Virgil frowns looking between Roman and the duo laying on the couch.
Princey really couldnât be that oblivious, can he?
âAh welcome, Remy. We didnât know youâd be joining us this evening,â says Logan.
Remy gives them the two-finger salute, making no effort to move.
âWat up?â
The others stand up from the table and move into the living room causing Patton to do his best from squirming under their scrutiny.
âWeâre so not happy to have you grace us with your presence and we hate that youâre keeping Patton company,â states Deceit as he rolls his eyes.
âGood to see some Sides remain the same as usual,â replies Remy.
Virgil watches Roman watch Patton and Remy; the Creative Side opens and closes his fist repeatedly like heâs fighting the urge to grab Patton from Remy and hold onto him forever. Alright, looks like Virgil is gonna have to do something â Loganâs oblivious to romantic feelings, which heâs made clear by not reacting to Virgil and Deceitâs flirting (both with him and each other).
âAlright, this has been fun but Lo, Dee and I got shit to do. Roman, why donât you hang out with Pat and Remy?â
Virgil doesnât let Roman respond before grabbing Logan by one hand and Dee with the other before dragging them out of the room, ignoring the squawks of indignation.
âLooks like someoneâs aware in that trio, not surprised itâs Virgil,â comments Remy.
Pattonâs gaze follows his best friend dragging the other two Sides out of the room unexpectedly.
âOhâŚso itâs not just me then? They have been spending a lot of time together lately,â comments Patton earning him a smile from Remy who in turn, earns a glare from Roman.
âYeah, I watch them occasionally; though, I have two far more attractive and deserving Sides to focus my attention on,â comments Remy, smirking at Roman.
âTw-two sides?â
âThatâs right, handsome. Pattonâs not the only one around here thatâs caught my eye,â says Remy with a wink.
Patton canât help it â he giggles at the expression on Romanâs face.
The sound draws the other two menâs attention to Patton, who blushes under their gaze.
âOh Patton, Iâm doing this all wrong,â Roman runs a hand through his hair, âIâm in love with you but Iâve only realized it right now.â
âOh Ro, Iâm in love with you too.â
Patton takes Romanâs hand then kisses the back of it.
Blushing, Roman canât believe Patton used one of his moves against him and it worked.
âWhat about me?â pouts Remy.
Patton grabs Remyâs hand then kisses the back of it as well before looking up at him and grinning.
It takes all of Remyâs willpower to not swoon at the gesture and from the look heâs getting from Roman, he didnât completely succeed.
âI really like you, Remy; a whole lot and you make me feel butterflies in my stomach,â confesses Patton.
Roman sees Remyâs about to say something so he jumps in.
âI too, feel something for you thatâs more than friendship and IâdâŚâ he hesitates and bites his lips as he thinks about how to phrase it, âIâd like to explore it, if youâre willing.â
Remy stares at the two of them, eyes wide in surprise.
Never in his wildest dreams, (and he could hear Patton laughing at the reference) did he think heâd ever not be alone; the two Sides heâs fallen for simply by watching them from a distance would be returning his feelings, even if theyâre not as strongâŚthe important thing is theyâre there and both Patton and Roman are open to seeing what they could be.
âThereâs nothing that could make me happier than getting the chance to be with you both,â answers Remy, smiling brightly.
He gets two equally bright smiles in return.
Patton grabs Romanâs hand before rushing across the room with his boyfriend in tow then launches himself at his other boyfriend onto the couch, dragging Roman with him so they end up in tangled pile of limbs, laughing their heads off and happiness radiating off them like itâs sunbeams and theyâre the sun.
The sight of Pattonâs favorite coffee shop brings a bright smile to his face and his excitement for his usual coffee drink grows. Itâs been a few days since heâs had a chance to get here last and heâs more than ready to partake in his favorite coffee beverage.
The bell rings as Patton pushes open the door.
The shop is fairly busy, filled with mostly regulars though by the looks of it, there are some newcomers trying the coffee for the first time. Good, its what the shop deserves.
âHey babes. I havenât seen you for a few days so I thought you found a new coffee shop and that broke my poor little heart,â calls out a familiar voice.
Patton looks over to the counter and sees the owner, Remy standing there with his hand dramatically over his heart.
Shaking his head, he grins at his friendâs antics.
âOh no, Iâd never do that. I know better than that,â replies Patton, âIâve missed you and the coffee these last few days. Blame it on work.â
Remy laughs.
âDo you need me to talk to Logan?â asks Remy.
âI appreciate it but after last timeâŚ..â Patton trails off.
Signing into the register, Remy focuses on the task at hand, now that his favorite customer is here.
âSo, the usual Pat?â asks Remy.
Patton nods his head.
âYuppers!â
Remy smiles as he enters the order into the register.
âSo, one large vanilla latte and letâs see what scones we have today,â he looks into the baked goods display, âone cinnamon scone for everyoneâs favorite cinnamon roll.â
Patton blushes at the compliment.
âGo have a seat, Patton and Iâll bring everything over when itâs ready,â comments Remy.
âThanks Rem,â replies Patton.
He walks over to one of the free tables by the window then scans the coffee shop, to people watch while he waits. Eventually, his gaze lands back at the counter and moves down the line from Remy helping another customer to the baristas making drinks and chatting.
In that second, Patton realizes thereâs a new person behind the counter â tall, well-kept hair, a charming smile whoâs making the people around him laugh as he makes the orders for the customers.
The new barista catches Pattonâs eye and winks, causing him to blush then turn his head away.
----------
On a particularly hot day, Patton decides to swing by the coffee shop for some nice and iced to drink because he needs a break from all the water and Gatorade heâs had already, to keep properly hydrated. He thinks Logan would be proud of him.
Patton waves at a couple of people he knows as he makes his way up the counter.
However, instead of Remy working the register, itâs the new barista.
Ok Patton. Youâve got this. Just because handsome and charming doesnât mean anything.
The manâs eyes widen in excitement when he realizes who Patton.
âOh! Youâre a friend of Remyâs and one of the first people who came here when he opened up a few years ago,â he says grinning.
Patton blinks at few times.
Then he blushes; both at the fact the man knows who he is and that Remyâs been talking about him.
âYup! Thatâll be me!â replies Patton brightly.
The man chuckles.
âSo, what will it be, padre?â
âThink Iâll do the iced chai tea latte and make it a large,â Patton looks at the manâs name tag, âRoman. Thanks!â
Roman rubs the back of his neck in embarrassment.
âI didnât introduce myself, did I? Iâve only been here a few days,â says Roman.
Patton smiles.
âNo worries, thatâs why name tags were invented,â replies Patton.
Roman rings him up then Patton pays before stepping out of the way of the next customer while he waits for his drink. Patton canât help watching Roman with a smile on his face.
----------
Weeks pass and Patton strikes up a friendship with Roman and itâs been the best few weeks of his life so far or it would be, if it wasnât for this pesky little crush heâs developed on Roman. Itâs just, Roman is so good, so kind and so charming. Really, itâs no surprise Pattonâs fallen for him honestly.
Patton enters the coffee shop one day, ready to see two of his favorite people in the world (he canât forget about Remy after all).
In the doorway, he pauses once he spots Roman â Roman standing very close to another guy dressed all in purple and black, blushing at whatever Romanâs whispering into his ear.
He decides heâs not in the mood for coffee after all.
----------
âTo be fair, itâs not like the topic of our relationship statuses ever came up. To use your words, itâs highly probable that Roman has a boyfriend. I would have been surprised if he didnât.â
Patton stares down at the coffee in his hands and sighs.
Sitting here in this popular chain coffee shop with Logan makes him feel weird and guilty. Not the Logan part; he likes that part actually. The coffee shop is too much for him to take â too loud, too fast and too crowded.
Itâs not Remyâs coffee shop.
Logan stares at his friend with a frown on his face.
âPerhaps, you should talk to Roman. Clearly, you miss him and Iâm sure he misses you. Youâre a hard person to not miss,â states Logan.
Patton gives him a small smile.
âWouldnât it be poking my nose into something thatâs not my business though? If he wanted me to know, heâd tell me when heâs good and ready to,â responds Patton dejectedly.
After all, heâs been taught to respect peopleâs privacy.
Loganâs frown grows bigger.
âYou do seem to have quite the conundrum, Patton.â
He just sighs then takes a sip of the subpar coffee.
----------
Pattonâs phone goes off, letting him know that he has a text message so he pulls out his phone and sees that its from Remy. The message is simply a video of a very sad-looking Roman trying to go about his job.
Immediately, he feels guilty.
Regardless of his feelings for Roman, Patton misses him and makes a mental note to stop by the coffee shop after work. He only hopes it wonât backfire on him and that Remy hasnât banned him.
----------
Opening the door to the shop, Pattonâs relieved to find the place fairly empty so he wonât make a fool of himself in front of a crowd. The first person he sees is Remy, so he cautiously makes his way over to him.
âUh, hey RemyâŚ.â
Patton bites his lip as he watches his friend freeze at the sound of his voice before slowly turn around. He wasnât prepared for what happened next.
Remyâs eyes widen at his appearance then slowly scan Pattonâs body from head to toe then back up again.
âPATTON!â
Throwing his arms around the startled Patton, Remy hugs him tightly and doesnât let go for a few minutes.
He releases Patton from his hug but keeps hold of his hand.
âIf I had known a video of Roman was all that it took to bring you back in, I would have sent it earlier,â comments Remy.
Patton blushes.
âA what of me?â asks a familiar voice.
Roman appears in the doorframe leading to the hallway the restrooms are located and Patton feels the breath leaves his body because Roman looks not very glittery like the last time Patton saw him.
Time slows down the moment Roman sees Patton standing there.
Remy lets go of Pattonâs hand then slowly backs away, subtly getting the last of the customers out of the shop before flipping the sign to âCloseâ and locking the front door. Then he watches his friends from somewhere out of the way.
Roman stumbles over his feet in a hurry to get to Patton, afraid this is a hallucination and heâll fade away.
Eyes wide and concern for Roman hurting himself, Patton rushes towards him just in time to have Roman trip over his feet, sending him flying into Patton, whoâs arms wrap around his waist as heâs knocked to the floor.
Looking up at Roman and meeting his gaze, Patton smiles brightly which is returned quickly and makes Roman look more like himself.
Roman slowly gets off of him then stands up before holding out a hand for Patton to take and he does, so with Romanâs help, heâs on his feet in seconds.
âYou alright, padre? Didnât mean to knock you over,â says Roman.
Patton gives his hand a squeeze.
âIâm good, better than good actually,â he replies.
Before either of them can say more, another voice interjects.
âWhat the hell is going on here?â
Itâs the purple punk guy Patton say talking to Roman last time he was here. He canât help trying to drop Romanâs hand and putting some space between them.
Romanâs having none of that.
Tugging on his hand, Roman causes Patton to stumble into him then quickly letâs go of Pattonâs hand in order to wrap his arm around his shoulder instead.
Mr. Purple makes his way across the room to them.
Patton looks between the two men in confusion.
âIsnât he your boyfriend, Roman?â
Thereâs silence for a couple minutes before its broken by the sound of glass breaking â Remy dropped a glass on the floor in order to cover his mouth to hide his laughter.
âYeah no, my dude. Whoever told you that is selling something. Princey here is the closet thing I have to a brother and my best friend but heâs not my type. I prefer someone with a brain in his head. Iâm Virgil, by the way and you must be Patton,â explains Virgil.
Patton shakes his hand as he blushes because of his assumption.
Roman stares at Patton with his mouth open for a few minutes before he realizes what happened.
âOh Patton, you cute puffball you,â he comments.
Virgil smirks.
âYeah, Princey here prefers guys who wear polos, have glasses and lots of freckles that he wants to count then kiss.â
