Carnelian is a variety of silicon dioxide part of the chalcedony family. The name carnelian is a corruption of the earlier cornelian and relates back to the latin 'cornum' - cornel cherry.

In the middle ages Carnelian was used in alchemy with other chalcedony stones, and during the renaissance Carnelian was carved with swords of warriors and placed in the home to guard against storms and lighting, or carried to protect against enchantments.
