Cats
I’ve had them hide under pillows,
Be the creature under my bed,
God they’d hide on my shelves instead.
I’ve had them climbing ladders,
All for concern of me,
Had them flee from my tears
After trying to soothe and comfort.
I spent years trying to get one on my lap,
And months cuddling another tight.
I’ve seen the slow death happen,
Been away for when one was discovered.
Cats have walked my life with me,
Stayed beside so many moments,
The good and the bad they shared.
Perhaps for now we’re lacking one,
And this house makes that a good thing,
But one day a feline will come home.
I’ll find a cat to love again.
